Africa-Press – Kenya. Strathmore University hockey teams the Scorpions and Gladiators used the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) games in Eldoret over the weekend as part of their preparations for the new season according to coach Meshack Senge.
The much-awaited Kenya Hockey Union 2023 league season kicks off on April 7 with the women’s team, Scorpions, looking to defend their crown as gladiators (men’s team) hope to challenge for a top four position.
Both sides won the national KUSA titles against Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology teams on Sunday. Grace Bwire and Brian Ogenche were the heroes in both categories as ‘strath’ won the finals by a 1-0 margin.
“We thank God that the victory belongs to him,” Senge said.
“Generally, the competition has been part of our preparations for the new season. We accomplished our mission and learnt a lot. We have seen our flaws and strengths and we need to get down to specifics with regards to what needs to be done perfectly. The fitness levels look good.”
Scorpions have their work cut out as they face the University of Nairobi in the season opener this Friday.
“A varsity derby always lives up to the hype irrespective of the opponent. It is always full of drama in the battle for bragging rights but we will do what is within our power to claim maximum points,” Senge reckoned.
