Africa-Press – Kenya. Lawyer Miguna Miguna has censured the government for the pension and retirement perks given to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Miguna said it was unacceptable to reward Uhuru, accusing him of creating an economic collapse during his regime.
Commenting on a breakdown of the Sh655.32 million pension in a tweet on Friday, Miguna condemned the arrangement.
“This is unacceptable even in a failed state. It’s unacceptable that he who would be rewarded with billions of taxpayers’ money 8 months after his looting spree,” he said.
According to Treasury documents, Uhuru has been receiving Sh1.32 million monthly pay since December 1, 2023.
He was also paid Sh39.6 million as a retirement package.
The retirement package includes travel (Sh162.49 million), purchase of vehicles (Sh140 million), and others (Sh121.68 million).
Further, the former President will receive Sh75.51 million for employees’ wages, Sh55.32 million for refreshments, office furniture (Sh50 million), and car maintenance (Sh50 million).
The former President is also entitled to full medical cover for treatment both locally and overseas in a package that includes himself, his spouse, and children of eligible age.
According to the presidential retirement benefits act, the benefits of a retired president will not be paid if the subject holds office in or is actively engaged in the activities of any political party.
“Where a retired President entitled to the benefits conferred by this Act, holds any appointive or elective post in or under the Government to which there is attached a rate of pay, other than a nominal rate, the benefits to which he is entitled shall be reduced by the amount of such payments,” the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act adds
