Africa-Press – Kenya. Opposition leader Raila Odinga has urged the government to give jobs to the youths who are addicted to alcohol instead of arresting them. Speaking in Muranga on Thursday during a town hall meeting, he said that young people are drinking alcohol due to lack of jobs.
“Sasa mtu mwingine anakuja anaanza kusema vijana waache kukunywa pombe washikwe. Vijana wanakunywa pombe kwa sababu hawana kazi,” Raila said.
(Another person has said that young people should stop drinking alcohol and that they should be arrested. Young people are drinking alcohol due to lack of jobs) He said that if young people are given jobs, they will stop drinking alcohol. Otherwise, they will continue taking alcohol to forget their problems.
“Apana shika mtu ati yeye amekunywa pombe. Patia yeye kazi. Patia yeye kazi atawacha pombe. Lakini kama hakuna chochote ya kufanya atafanya nini? Si apige pige tu. Ili asahau shida yake,” Raila said.
(Don’t arrest someone for drinking alcohol. Give them a job and they will stop alcohol. But if there is nothing he can do, let him continue drinking) He went on to say that the government does not understand Kenyan’s problems.
On April 14, 2023, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met Mt Kenya leaders in a bid to rally them to unite in the fight against the alcohol and drug abuse menace.
Gachagua accredited the high rate of drug abuse to the unregulated alcohol-selling joints. He said the situation was dire as the region was at a high risk of losing the entire generation to the menace, especially in five central Kenya counties.
