Africa-Press – Kenya. Police in Murang’a have confiscated Kenya Revenue Authority stickers and counterfeit liquor. The police raided a wines and spirits outlet in Kambiti shopping centre, Murang’a South subcounty, where they found the stickers.
County Commander of Police David Mathiu said the owner claimed the stickers were supplied to him by KRA. He, however, said unscrupulous traders have been using KRA stickers to label counterfeit drinks to deceive consumers and security agents.
In the same area, the officers confiscated 54 crates of assorted counterfeit alcoholic drinks in a private residence. Mathiu said he led his officers in an operation after receiving information from members of the public that the outlet was selling counterfeit liquor noting that the suspect will be arraigned in court.
In the Kangema subcounty, police seized 73 crates of counterfeit liquor that were selling at Sh40 per half-litre bottle. They also confisicated 21 kilogrammes of bhang The contraband were recovered from two vehicles following a tip-off from members of the public.
“We will continue to the crackdown on illicit and counterfeit liquor until it is completely wiped out. So far, we have managed to destroy thousands of litres,” he said.
He said the crackdown has minimised criminal activities and anti-social characters among the youths. Mathiu said investigations will be carried out to establish the source of KRA stickers and whether they are genuine. He lauded residents to volunteer information that will help to fight both illicit and counterfeit liquor.
The fight against alcoholism was recently rejuvenated following the meeting between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and leaders from the Central region in which he declared an onslaught on those selling alcoholic drinks against the law.
