Africa-Press – Kenya. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service portal will be opened in a week’s time, CEO Mercy Wahome has said.
This will enable the 2022 KCSE candidates to apply for courses in various universities and TVETs across the country.
“Once the universities have given us their costs, which I hope they will do in a week’s time, we will be ready to open,” she said.
President William Ruto said the unusual delay that has been witnessed in the opening of the portal was occasioned by the need to agree on the new funding model.
“We needed to agree not to admit students to universities and TVETs without us having a plan on how their funding and education will be carried out,” Ruto said.
They spoke on Wednesday during the unveiling of the new university education and funding model.
Ruto said students’ placement to universities and TVETs will not be linked to the funding.
He said the funding will focus on three categories including the vulnerable, less vulnerable and able.
Ruto lauded the team who compiled the model, which included the chair of the Presidential Council of Economic Advisers David Ndii and Vice Chancellors.
He added that the issue of university funding had been postponed for long, causing challenges to the institutions.
“We decided that it is time we figured out the model. I am pleased to note that these VCs’ contributions to the model were immense. Our work was very simple because they came with the good ideas that we assembled and got this funding model in place,” the President said.
