Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya’s Michael Olunga hopes to end an already fantastic season on a high after being nominated for the 2022 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Best XI.
Olunga has been nominated among the 10 most impressive forwards from the 2022 AFC Champions League.
This is the second year in a row Olunga has been nominated for the ‘Dream Team’ that is voted by fans.
The former Gor player was instrumental in his side Al Duhail’s run into the semifinals of the competition. The forward found the back of the net six times and assisted twice. He also recorded the most shorts (27) by a forward of which 15 were on target.
The 2021 top scorer was ranked third among the top scorers in the 2022 edition behind teammate Edmilson and Daegu’s Zeca.
The 29-year-old bagged a match-winning brace in a 2-1 victory over Al Shabab to help his team advance into the last four stage. Olunga scored four times and provided twice in the group stage.
In the just-concluded season, Olunga enjoyed a phenomenal campaign as he won the Qatar Stars League title, the Ooredoo Cup, and the Qatar Cup. He additionally emerged as the top scorer in all three competitions.
The Kenyan international will face quality competition from teammate Edmilson Junior who topped the scoring chart of the competition with eight goals including a hattrick against Pakhtakor.
Joining the list of nominated candidates is former Manchester United and Al Hilal’s Odion Ighalo who finished as the second top-scorer with seven goals.
Other nominees include Urawa Red Diamond’s Kasper Junker , Bergson of Johor Darul Ta’zim FC , Al Rayyan’s Yacine Brahimi and Yohan Boli, Daegu’s Zeca, Pathum United’s Ikhsan Fandi and Yu Kobayashi of Kawasaki Frontale.
