Internet penetration rises by 62.5 per cent, Oguna says

Africa-Press – Kenya. Internet penetration has increased by 62.5 per cent over the last nine years, Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has said.

In a statement on Thursday, Oguna said that Kenya has noted a rise in internet penetration during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reign.

“The dividends of the investments in undersea fibre cable manifest has seen internet penetration rise from 31.4 per cent in 2013 to 93.9 per cent in 2022,” Oguna said.

He added that cellular phone penetration has also increased from 74.9 per cent in 2013 to 131 per cent in 2022, hence rising by 56.1per cent.

This comes months after Google launched subsea internet cables in Africa to boost internet connectivity in African countries.

Fibre optic cables are ideal for signal transmission for HD Televisions and good internet because of more bandwidth and faster speeds.

Over the next five years, Google says 300 million people will be connected to the internet in Africa.

The new line is expected to make land in South Africa, Namibia and Nigeria, then branch again to neighboring countries by the end of 2022.

The cable is expected to reduce internet prices by 14 per cent by 2025, according to an Africa Practice and Genesis Analytics assessment commissioned by Google.

Fast and affordable internet connectivity means more access to information and access to communication networks.

This will give a boost to a country’s education, health, and career opportunities as well as a faster growth of its economy.

Oguna said that over the same time, mobile money transfers increased from Sh1.9 trillion to Sh6.8 trillion.

He said the government has leveraged on the use of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) to revolutionize service delivery to its citizenry through platforms such as eCitizen.
