Kaluma: Raila Left a Political will for ODM to Follow

Africa-Press – Kenya. Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has dismissed claims that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political journey ended without a clear succession plan, saying the late ODM leader left behind a “political will” to guide the party and its supporters.

In a post on X on Saturday, Kaluma said that contrary to perceptions that Raila’s death created a leadership vacuum, the ODM leader had already outlined his vision for the future through the Broad-Based Government arrangement.

“Some politicians wrongly believe Baba rested before giving ODM and his supporters political direction for the future. Please don’t lie to yourself. Baba didn’t just leave us in the Broad-Based Government, but he also left a political will to be followed and implemented,” Kaluma stated.

He said the so-called “political will” represents Raila’s final roadmap for ODM and its allies — a framework meant to ensure continuity of his political philosophy of inclusivity.

Kaluma added that this blueprint would form the foundation upon which ODM intends to consolidate its strength within the Broad-Based Government and beyond.

According to the legislator, ODM remains firmly anchored in the arrangement that Raila helped shape before his death.

He expressed confidence that the party will remain united and grow stronger as it seeks to implement Raila’s political ideals.

“For a start, the Broad-Based Government will win all the by-election seats come November,” Kaluma said, signalling ODM’s determination to maintain influence in upcoming electoral contests.

Kaluma’s remarks come amid renewed debate within ODM and the wider opposition coalition over the party’s leadership and ideological direction.

Since Raila’s passing, several leaders have expressed differing opinions on how best to preserve his legacy, with some calling for generational renewal while others emphasise adherence to his long-held principles.

Kaluma cautioned against attempts to reinterpret or dilute Raila’s vision, saying the best way to honour the veteran politician is by implementing his policies and maintaining party unity.

Raila Odinga, who led ODM for more than two decades, played a central role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape through his contribution to constitutional reforms, devolution, and opposition politics.

His death has sparked discussions on the party’s next chapter and leadership transition.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the Broad-Based Government coalition is working to ensure candidates backed by the alliance perform strongly in the upcoming by-elections.
