Nyando MP Okello beats 8 to retain seat on ODM ticket

Africa-Press – Kenya. Nyando MP Jared Okello has retained his seat after being declared the winner.

Constituency returning officer Moris Simiyu declared Okello as the winner with less than 50 polling stations out of the 166 yet to be tallied.

He said the remaining polling stations could not affect the results.

“Results from these polling stations will not affect the final tally,” Simiyu told the press on Wednesday at Ahero Multipurpose Hall.

According to provisional results, Okello led with 45,000 votes against the closest challenger with 4,000. There are 71,680 registered voters in Nyando.

He was defending his seat on an ODM ticket. Okello was battling out for the seat with eight candidates.

They included Jared Sala (DAP), Thomas Ouya (Independent) Samuel Ojunga (independent), Dixon Okech (LDP), Willis Orowe (MDG), Patrick Odeny (UDA), Christine Otieno (Jubilee) and Charles Opiyo (independent).

“I want to thank the Almighty God for the moment’s win. I want to sincerely thank the people of Nyando for exhibiting such a high degree of confidence in my leadership,” he said.

“The people of Nyando, you have won the seat. We have been given the certificate,” Okello said.

Before he took to the streets to celebrate the victory, Okello pledged to pursue all the interests that the voters bestowed on him five years ago.

“We managed to complete lots of promises but now as we begin the second term we want to do a lot more,” Okello said.

He thanked his family for standing with him though the electioneering period, saying it was not an easy journey.

He promised the people of Nyando to fulfil his development agenda to make the constituency a great place.

Okello said IEBC has always conducted elections well but quickly pointed fingers at them on how they have in the past tallied the presidential votes.

“As much as we are giving them a pat on the back they have not won the confidence of Kenyans on the way the election has been conducted considering the Kiems kits failures,” he said.
