Africa-Press – Kenya. Harambee Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma says the upcoming international friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal offer an ideal platform for Kenya to learn and grow.

The matches, scheduled for Friday (Equatorial Guinea) at the Emir Complex and November 18 (Senegal) at the Mardan Stadium in Antalya, Turkey, are seen as crucial stepping stones for the national team.

“I think these games will teach us a lot. Playing against strong opponents like Equatorial Guinea and Senegal is always a test, but it’s also a chance to learn,” Ouma said.

Ouma, who has rapidly risen from local leagues to European competitions, believes the matches will challenge both experienced and young players in the squad.

“These friendlies are perfect for us to measure ourselves. It’s not just about winning, but understanding how to compete at the highest level,” he added.

Born on June 10, 2004, Ouma started his career at Nairobi City Stars in 2020 after completing his studies at Laiser Hill Academy.

“My journey from City Stars to Europe has been incredible. Every game has been a lesson,” Ouma reflected.

In February 2025, Ouma transferred to Slavia Prague, further cementing his reputation, before a loan move to Lech Poznań in July 2025.

“Each club has taught me something different, from tactics to mental toughness,” he noted.

Ouma earned his first call-up to the Kenya national team in 2021, quickly establishing himself in World Cup qualifying matches.

He has also represented Kenya at the U20 level, highlighting his versatility and long-term potential.

“These games against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal are crucial for us. We want to show that Kenyan players can compete with the best,” Ouma emphasised.

“Every minute on the pitch counts for experience and confidence.”

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars assistant coach Vasili Manousakis echoed this sentiment, highlighting the developmental nature of the friendlies.

“Yes, two very strong opponents that are preparing for Afcon, so we definitely have our work cut out for us. While they focus on Afcon, we focus on the growth of a new crop of players,” Manousakis said.

Ouma believes the new-look team can rise to the occasion. “The coach wants us to take risks, express ourselves, and learn from these challenges. That’s exactly what we need.”

Coach Benni McCarthy has named a largely inexperienced squad, including youngsters who have impressed both abroad and in the SportPesa League.

“It’s exciting to see so many young players here. We all want to make our mark and help Kenya reach new heights.”

Manousakis added that the competition for national team spots has become intense.

“There are so many good local players performing week in and week out. It’s a selection headache, but that’s a good problem to have.”

Ouma commented, “When everyone is pushing each other, the team becomes stronger. That’s how we grow.”

Equatorial Guinea and the Teranga Lions of Senegal are formidable opponents, with players competing in top leagues worldwide.

Yet Ouma remains confident. “Playing against world-class players is always tough, but it’s also inspiring. We have to rise to the challenge,” he said.

“Every duel, every pass, every tackle is a lesson for us,” Manousakis stressed the dual goal of development and performance.

“The approach is to win while giving these youngsters the taste of senior football,” he noted. Ouma echoed this focus on learning while striving for victory.

“We want to compete, we want to win, but most importantly, we want to improve. That’s what these friendlies are about.”
