Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Wiyeta Girls got off to a flying start at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games after a 2-0 win over hosts APAER of Rwanda.<\/p>\n

The Kenyans got a penalty in the first half of the game following a handball offence in the opposition box and Edna Wanda converted it before going on to score again in the second half to seal the win.<\/p>\n

Wiyeta, who hail from Trans Nzoia county are three-time winners \u20142005, 2006 and 2017\u2014 and are hoping to add yet another feather on their cap to match compatriots Arch-Bishop Njenga, who have four title.<\/p>\n

They will be seeking to avoid the misfortune of last year, when they fell 2-1 to Uganda side St Noa Girls in the final played in Arusha, Tanzania.<\/p>\n

St. Noa went on to represent East Africa at the 2022 International School\u2019s Federation football championships in Rabat, Morocco, where they won a bronze medal.<\/p>\n

In a post-match interview, Wiyeta skipper Elizabeth Ochoka said they will need to put their best forward to clinch the regional championships.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe match was tough. These East African games are not easy and we need to work hard to be number one. We will work just as hard in our next match as we hope to build on today’s win,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

They have been drawn in Pool ‘B’ alongside Tanzanian champions Fountain Gate, hosts APAER, Sacred Heart, and Amus College from Uganda.<\/p>\n

Reigning champions St. Noa are in Pool ‘A’ alongside Madira Girls of Kenya, 2019 champions Kawempe Muslim from Uganda, Rwandese GS Gatizo, Kenyan champions Butere Girls and Tanzania\u2019s Ziba Secondary School.<\/p>\n
