Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna has petitioned the National Assembly to come to the rescue of teachers deployed as head teachers without any salary increment.<\/p>\n

Nguna told the House that before the July 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement, there were about 1,000 classroom teachers, who were promoted but after a successful competitive interview for senior graduate teachers.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of these teachers were deployed to become head teachers from 2018 while others remained as senior teachers,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Nguna added that despite their additional roles, the deployed headteachers remained in the same Job Group.<\/p>\n

He said their salaries and allowances did not change as per the requirement of the July 2017 CBA.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir counterparts who went through the same interview and became head teachers before the July 2017 CBA are now in Job Group D1 and earning higher salaries and allowances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Mwingi West MP said the two categories of teachers have the same qualifications and are in the same Job Group, performing the same roles and facing the same challenges yet they earn different salaries and allowances.<\/p>\n

He said the situation was contrary to Section 5(1) of the Labour Relations Act, 2007.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the aforementioned concerns, the teachers feel discriminated and demoralised even as they continue to undertake their duties,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Nguna said the teachers have made their best efforts to have their matter addressed and resolved but there have been no satisfactory responses or action.<\/p>\n

He said the efforts included individual teachers\u2019 letters to TSC seeking fair remuneration and engagement with the Kenya National Union of Teachers to intervene.<\/p>\n

Nguna asked the House to engage TSC to review the salaries and allowances of the concerned teachers and place them on par with their colleagues.<\/p>\n

He further wants TSC to pay the teachers arrears for the period between deployment as headteachers till now.<\/p>\n

Speaker Moses Wetang\u2019ula referred the matter to the Public Petitions Committee.<\/p>\n
