Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya has said he will not succumb to Kenya Kwanza’s pressure to join their coalition.<\/p>\n

The former Kakamega governor was arrested on Wednesday alongside his wives over alleged embezzlement of Sh1.3 billion shillings during his tenure.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Vihiga on Saturday, he said the ruling party should be content with Prime CS Musalia and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.<\/p>\n

“You can’t force me to join your coalition,” Oparanya said.<\/p>\n

“You have Mudavadi and Wetangula. Why are you fighting to have me in your camp at any cost? I am in ODM and I will remain in ODM.”<\/p>\n

He was speaking at the memorial service of Byrum Makokha at Ibubi Girls’ Secondary School in Luanda subcounty.<\/p>\n

Oparanya said he will stand firm and remain loyal to his party ODM, which is currently under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.<\/p>\n

“Whether you jail me for the next 100 years or not, no amount of threats will bring me down, I promise the Kenya Kwanza government,” he said.<\/p>\n

Oparanya said he had served as an MP for 10 years, minister for five years and governor for 10 years.<\/p>\n

“You can’t tell me for all these years I have been in politics until I have exited, now is the time you have realised that I have stolen. That’s impossible,” he said.<\/p>\n

“This is a clear indicator that you are mixing politics and leadership, which is not good.”<\/p>\n

EACC director of communications Eric Ngumbi confirmed to the Star that the former governor was brought to the EACC Integrity Centre together with his wife around noon last Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The detectives on Tuesday went to his Butere home in Mumias and also his Karen residence on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

Insiders also told the Star that the commission was investigating how the county spent about Sh1.3 billion between 2013 and 2022, when Oparanya was in office.<\/p>\n

“Investigations are currently in the preliminary stages,” the insider said.<\/p>\n

“We have searched his properties. Interrogation is ongoing and we cannot tell what time it will end.”<\/p>\n

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi said President William Ruto is currently using state machinery to silence the Opposition.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident, while campaigning, he promised not to use state machinery to frustrate the Opposition, but he has gone contrary to his promise,\u201d Osotsi said.<\/p>\n
