Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Thousands of farmers in Kenya still use pedestrian advice on pest management and the use of agrochemicals, a move that risks their lives and food safety.<\/p>\n

This became evident from a three-day training for horticultural farmers in the Charangany area of Trans Nzoia County where most of them confessed to failing to adhere to Global Good Agricultural Practices (Global GAP).<\/p>\n

Global GAP is the internationally set standard for farm production which is meant to ensure safe and sustainable agriculture that does not harm consumers or the environment.<\/p>\n

During the workshop organised by the European Union (EU)- supported Market Access Upgrade Program (MARKUP) Kenya, some farmers said besides failing to read and follow the instructions on agrochemical containers, they have been unknowingly using banned agrochemicals.<\/p>\n

Esther Afande from Motosiet Avocado Farmers Group in Trans Nzoia said some farmers do not observe the pre-harvest interval (PHI), which is the wait time between a pesticide application and when a crop can be harvested.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been taught that such harmful practices endanger consumers\u2019 lives because of the high chemical residue in the food, especially fruits and vegetables plus the sprays are still potent if PHI is not observed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Afande said she learnt that women have a great role in food choice and safety in the kitchen and the need to spare small pieces of land for kitchen gardens to ensure food safety at the family level.<\/p>\n

She added that careless use of chemicals limits their access to the market because the produce does not conform to market demands.<\/p>\n

She promised to impart the knowledge gained through the training to her neighbours and friends once she returned home.<\/p>\n

Rosemary Waweru of Wamwini Kiungani Avocado Value Chain said she learnt about soil management and the importance of soil testing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have realised that my soil could be having issues because avocado trees wither soon after replanting and the surviving ones do not flourish as expected,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Waweru added that they were taught about the Integrated Pest Management system(IPM) which is less chemical-based and less costly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have also learnt the significance of using clean water for irrigation and proper use of pesticides to grow quality fruits that can pass the Global GAP test and access premium local, regional and international markets.<\/p>\n

She revealed that she had been using chemicals with abandon and on layman\u2019s advice instead of seeking expert counsel.<\/p>\n

Trans Nzoia County Government Crop Management Assistant Director, Kenneth Kangai said MARKUP in collaboration with the county executive has been creating awareness of compliance with market requirements.<\/p>\n

He said the move was aimed at ensuring that farmers grow clean produce while at the same time considering environmental biodiversity.<\/p>\n

Kangai said the training was timely because the county was conducting crop diversification from purely growing maize to horticulture.<\/p>\n

He observed that the region has an infestation of many pests which compels farmers to use the wrong chemicals and high dosages.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorkshops such as this will educate farmers on the agrochemicals that are passed by the Pest Control Product Board (PCPB) and Agrochemicals Association of Kenya (AAK) and how to use them in the right measures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kangai commended the United States Industrial Development Organisation (Unido)through the MARKUP project for helping the farmers group with proper agricultural practices that have helped them produce quality and quantity food that is acceptable worldwide.<\/p>\n
