Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>County governments and all state agencies have been directed to resolve all pending audit queries by June next year as part of the government’s strategy to fight graft.<\/p>\n

This came as it emerged that counties still lead in audit queries though the magnitude has dropped since the first years of devolution.<\/p>\n

This emerged at the ongoing Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB) sensitisation programme for county audit committee members in Naivasha.<\/p>\n

In the last couple of years, the Auditor-General has raised hundreds of audit queries in ministries and counties, majority of which have not been resolved to date.<\/p>\n

According to PSASB chairman Pius Nduati, the move to clear all pending audit queries is part of the government’s zero-fault programme.<\/p>\n

Nduati admitted that while this would be a tall order, it forms part of the government’s move in addressing good governance and service delivery.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, the chairman said that they are working closely were the counties and other state agencies in achieving the directive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government has issued an order that all pending audit queries should be resolved by June 2024 and thereafter public sector bodies should ensure there are no more queries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nduati noted that the majority of the queries from the Auditor-General are recurring issues which could be resolved with goodwill from all parties.<\/p>\n

He called for the support of county audit committees which for years were seen as enemies in the devolved system.<\/p>\n

The board CEO Fredrick Riaga said there was great improvement by counties in addressing audit queries.<\/p>\n

He said the transition from the cash to accrual accounting for all government agencies and counties was underway.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the three year transition programme, we shall first target finances and fix assets with the system set to be more effective and accountable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
