Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said President William Ruto\u2019s administration is committed to growing the matatu industry.<\/p>\n

Gachagua said the government is keen to provide an enabling environment for the sub-sector to thrive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith over 70 per cent of our people relying on the matatu industry, which contributes more than Sh200 billion to the economy, an enabling environment for the subsector to thrive is a priority for the Ruto administration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued after hosting representatives of the Federation of Drivers and Conductors and other transport stakeholders at his official residence in Karen, the DP reiterated that the transport sector is a key driver of the economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want the benefits to trickle down to the players, including the drivers and conductors for a dignified life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The meeting discussed ways of dignifying and improving the working space and welfare of the members- particularly the youth who form more than 90 per cent of the matatu workforce.<\/p>\n

Gachagua added that the meeting highlighted and proposed the way forward on pertinent issues including the fight against abuse of substances, drugs and alcohol.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe menace is rampant in this industry, a factor that negatively impacts optimal productivity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The DP said the meeting also discussed issues on insurance, road safety and security, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with the Ministry of Roads and Transport, County Governments and other relevant agencies, we will address road safety concerns, especially signage,\u201d he assured.<\/p>\n

He said the government is determined to streamline the subsector for improved contribution to the economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs other actors keep making recommendations to the drivers\u2019 curriculum, we will consider cooperation with the National Youth Service not only for more skills but also saving and investment culture,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
