{"id":10743,"date":"2020-07-06T18:51:42","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T18:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=10743"},"modified":"2020-07-06T18:51:42","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T18:51:42","slug":"resumption-of-sporting-activities-looming-president-uhuru-announces-phased-re-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/sport\/resumption-of-sporting-activities-looming-president-uhuru-announces-phased-re-opening","title":{"rendered":"Resumption of sporting activities looming? &#8211; President Uhuru announces phased re-opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the phased re-opening of the country as he seeks to revive the economy from the devastation wrought by the Covic-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from Harambee House, Nairobi, Uhuru emphasised the need for counties to meet \u201cirreducible minimums\u201d, revealing the country had made significant progress in levels of preparedness to tackle Covid-19 patients.<\/p>\n<p>Uhuru, however, warned Kenyans of the risk they now face without previously imposed government restrictions, asking for careful positivity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By reopening, we must be cognisant of the fact that we are much more at risk when the restrictions were in place. We must exercise cautious optimism.\u00a0 We have not yet met the irreducible minimums 100 per cent. However, we have reached a reasonable level of preparedness across our counties,&#8221; President Uhuru said.<\/p>\n<p>The President also revealed the government will review interactions among people during this period, and made it clear should the number of COVID-19 cases spike, the country would be forced to revert to lockdown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cShould the situation deteriorate, we will have to revert back to lockdown. Any traits that signal the worsening of the pandemic, we shall have no other choice but to return to lockdown,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><\/div>\n<p>Uhuru announcement comes hours after the country recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases &#8211; 389.<\/p>\n<p>On April 6, Uhuru announced the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi counties. This came after a report revealed Nairobi accounted for 82 per cent of the total infections while the\u00a0 Coastal counties account for 14 per cent &#8211; hence the\u00a0order.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To contain and limit the spread of the disease to other parts of the country<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0the National Security Council has sanctioned and caused the issuance of the following additional measures, as follows:\u00a0That there shall be a cessation of all movement by road, rail or air in and out,&#8221; President Uhuru announced.<\/p>\n<p>Uhuru also announced restrictions would remain in place for social\/political gatherings, bars as well as weddings for a further 21 days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SO WHEN DOES SPORT RETURN?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed on July 1 appointed an Advisory Committee meant will draw up protocols required for the resumption of sporting activities in the country.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.standardmedia.co.ke\/images\/monday\/ryfao8ongnaf3vav5f0301b6725fd.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>Sports Heritage and Culture Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed speaking during the commissioning of Mamboleo Showground in Kisumu into Jomo Kenyata International Stadium on June 24th 2020.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sporting activities in Kenya were halted in March as the nation took steps to stop the spread of Covid-19 that has wreaked havoc around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The committee will comprise of senior officials from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage and its agencies, experienced federation managers, medics and also representatives.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released on Tuesday, the CS said the committee, which will be headed by the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry,\u00a0 Hassan Noor Hassan, is expected to engage all key stakeholders and collect their views on ideal protocols to be put in place before the resumption of sports activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers are expected to recommend protocols that should be applied ahead of permitting the resumption of sports, review and make recommendations on any other matter that may affect resumption of<br \/>\nsporting activities,\u201d the Cabinet Secretary said.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee\u2019s Terms of Reference also include a review of global\u00a0trends in resuming of sporting activities and exploring the possibility of\u00a0the resumption of sports activities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe for assigning two senior officers to support the Ministry draft the\u00a0resumption of Sports protocols.
