Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Surgeons at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital in Kirinyaga have performed the first spinal surgery registering a medical milestone in the county.<\/p>\n

The surgeons carried out the delicate surgery on a 30-year-old man who had suffered spinal injuries with lumbar vertebrae one and two fractures after falling from a height while working.<\/p>\n

The surgical operation was led by Dr. Robert Oluoch, an Orthopedic Surgeon and included 10 specialists including an orthopedic and spine technician, general surgeons, medical officers, an anesthesiologist and nurses.<\/p>\n

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru hailed the surgical operation as a big milestone towards the full realization of the provision of quality and affordable healthcare for the residents.<\/p>\n

Waiguru said this was the first time a spinal surgery had successfully been conducted in a public hospital in the county.<\/p>\n

She attributed its success to the dedication of medics and the availability of modern equipment at the new medical complex established at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.<\/p>\n

“The spinal surgery at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital is a great milestone and testament that indeed, the elevation of Kerugoya General Hospital from a Level Four to Level Five Hospital was a well thought out idea,” she said.<\/p>\n

Waiguru said the success of the surgery affirms that the facility is now able to offer specialized medical services to locals and save them endless referrals to other facilities.<\/p>\n

The governor lauded the surgical team for the milestone that she said gives hope to patients.<\/p>\n

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakumicha also hailed the medical team for the successful surgery terming it a statement of the gains of devolution.<\/p>\n

She reiterated the national government\u2019s commitment to supporting counties in the delivery of health services.<\/p>\n

Dr. Alex Kariuki, one of the surgeons who conducted the surgery, said that the delicate surgery took the specialists five hours to accomplish.<\/p>\n

He said it involved instrumentation and stabilization of the spine involving decompressive laminectomy of lumber spine one and two.<\/p>\n

Kariuki said since the vertebrae is crucial in protecting the spinal cord, the complex surgery required a multi-disciplinary approach.<\/p>\n

He confirmed that the patient is in stable condition and currently recovering in the general ward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the new modern and well-equipped theaters, there will be no need to refer patients to other medical facilities because doctors have the capacity and skills to perform even more delicate surgical operations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
