Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said the fight against illicit brews and substance abuse is bearing fruits.<\/p>\n

This, he observed, brings hope for a sober generation that almost got lost to the menace.<\/p>\n

Gachagua, who spent his Boxing Day with children at his home in Mathira, Nyeri, said he was inspired by the young people he met on his way from Nairobi.<\/p>\n

He thanked Kenyans for embracing the fight and ensuring that the young people do not result to abuse of alcohol, bhang and other drugs.<\/p>\n

“I want to say that our fight has been successful. Vita dhidi ya pombe haramu na madawa ya kulevya umeanza kuonyesha matunda. Before that we were almost losing an entire generation,” he said.<\/p>\n

In August, the DP said the fight was progressing well with an estimated 70 per cent success.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Nyandarua County then, Gachagua stood firm on the mission, saying he would allow no one to comprise it.<\/p>\n

“We are working hard to eradicate the illicit brews which were dumped in the region (Mt Kenya region). We are 70 per cent successful, we are still remaining with 30 per cent,” he said.<\/p>\n

The government’s programme, which Gachagua leads on crackdown against the sale and consumption of illicit brews, narcotics and other psychotropic substances, began earlier in the year.<\/p>\n

Among the earlier partners were various counties in the Central and Upper Eastern regions including Murang\u2019a, Kiambu, Nyeri, Nyandarua and Kirinyaga where the menace had been prevalent.<\/p>\n

The counties of Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Marsabit, Embu and Isiolo were also roped in.<\/p>\n
