Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>President William Ruto’s remarks have always caused reactions from Kenyans; whether positive or negative.<\/p>\n

This year the President made surprising moves in his speech, orders and statement that left Kenyans talking.<\/p>\n

Riot Act to Cabinet<\/b><\/p>\n

President Ruto on August 1, 2023, put on a bossy face with his Cabinet being on the receiving end.<\/p>\n

Sending a signal that work comes before friendship, Ruto read the riot act to his Cabinet.<\/p>\n

The President talked tough at the State House where the CSs were signing performance contracts.<\/p>\n

It started with two CSs Interior’s Kithure Kindiki and his Public Service counterpart Moses Kuria locked out of State House after they arrived late.<\/p>\n

The two were barred from accessing the venue and the President demanded a show course letter on why they were late for the Cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n

Ruto also said they should not use traffic as an excuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you cannot keep time with your employer, you have dismissed yourself. It\u2019s just as simple as that,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n

Foreign trips <\/b><\/p>\n

Just like any other Head of State, President William Ruto has been making foreign trips aimed at strengthening the country’s bilateral ties.<\/p>\n

As of November 26, 2023, Ruto had taken 43 trips since he took power in September 2022.<\/p>\n

Kenyans online appeared unimpressed by the President\u2019s latest mission abroad, which in their view had become \u201ctoo many.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, there was a request from the National Assembly\u2019s Defence Committee in May for an extra allocation of Sh1.3 billion for the President\u2019s global travels, supplementing the Sh700 million already allocated by the Treasury.<\/p>\n

Early in November while in Uasin Gishu, President Ruto addressed the concerns raised about his numerous foreign trips.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged public concern over the trips but said they are an integral part of his presidential duties.<\/p>\n

He termed himself as Kenya\u2019s chief agent and ambassador noting that the development of the country can only be achieved through planning.<\/p>\n

Ruto made the remarks during the 40th-anniversary Thanksgiving celebrations and fundraising for the Anglican Church of Kenya Eldoret Diocese.<\/p>\n

\u201cConcerning my foreign travels, that is my work as President. I am the chief agent of Kenya, I am the ambassador of Kenya planning on how the country moves forward,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the chief agent and chief ambassador of our country, these foreign trips, that people are making noise about are crucial because we can look for opportunities for Kenyans. We are a great nation and going places. We shall do the right thing and Kenya shall prosper.”<\/p>\n

The President said it was through the trips that he has been able to secure several deals in favour of the country.<\/p>\n

These foreign travels cost the Kenyan taxpayer more than Sh56 million in travel expenses for the first half of the financial year ending in June 2024.<\/p>\n

Invites Raila for talks<\/b><\/p>\n

On July 25, 2023, President Ruto extended his arm of ‘generosity’ and offered to meet Opposition Chief Raila Odinga for face-to-face talks when he returned from a trip to Tanzania.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friend Raila Odinga, I\u2019m off to Tanzania for a human capital meeting to harmonise the expansion of employment opportunities in our continent,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAm back tomorrow evening, and as you have always known, am available to meet one-on-one with you anytime at your convenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

By then, Raila and other Azimio leaders were leading anti-government protests across the country.<\/p>\n

The move by the President was seen as an attempt to end countrywide protests against the government.<\/p>\n

Mambo ni matatu<\/b><\/p>\n

The mambo ni matatu phrase came to the fore in August when President Ruto used it to warn sugar cartels.<\/p>\n

He warned the sugar cartels that they would have to either cease their corrupt ways or leave Kenya, go to jail or go to heaven.<\/p>\n

“Mambo ni matatu; hama Kenya, enda jela ama safiri mbinguni,” Ruto said.<\/p>\n

The words have since become a sensation on social media, particularly on the “Mambo ni Matatu” X trend, Kenyans reacted to the president’s statement with wit and humour, sharing funny tweets under the trending hashtag.<\/p>\n

Political leaders also picked the phrase and used it to warn cartels, and wrongdoers in society.<\/p>\n

The phrase also made a debut at the Africa Climate Summit.<\/p>\n

Ruto used it in his speech while explaining ways to ease access to finances in African countries.<\/p>\n

“While we are thinking about financing in Africa, three things are very important. As they say in Kenya, mambo ni matatu (there are three things),” he said.<\/p>\n

“Speed, scale and affordability are required to ease access to finances by African countries.”<\/p>\n

Kenyan leaders and guests seated at the summit burst into laughter when Ruto mentioned the phrase.<\/p>\n

Ruto drives himself<\/b><\/p>\n

On September 4, 2023, Kenya hosted the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi and making a surprise move, President Ruto drove himself from State House in an Autopax Air EV Yetu vehicle to KICC where the event was taking place.<\/p>\n

He came through State House Road to Kenyatta Avenue to Uhuru Highway and later to City Hallway for the function.<\/p>\n

Even though it is not an official procedure for a president to be on the steering wheel, it is not a very rare sight for Kenyans.<\/p>\n
