Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kwanthanze High School\u2019s fast-rising opposite-hitter Marlyn Terry is likely to replace Sharon Chepchumba in Malkia Strikers\u2019 squad ahead of the Challenger Cup set for January 21-30 in Cairo, Egypt.<\/p>\n

Chepchumba recently underwent knee surgery and is thus ruled out of the championships, alongside Leonida Kasaya \u2014 who is attending to personal issues.<\/p>\n

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) deputy president Paul Bitok said they are hoping Veronica Adhiambo, who joined Turkish-based club Tarsus Belediyespor on a one-year deal, will be released to plug in the gaps.<\/p>\n

The Egyptian event will double up as a qualifier for the African Games in Accra, Ghana, in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cTerry is doing very well. I have introduced her to coach Japheth Munala. I want her to play at the African Games. We want to ensure she gets a role as a top player,\u201d said Bitok.<\/p>\n

Bitok emphasised the importance of maintaining a winning spirit and addressing the gaps in youth and junior programs while outlining plans to nurture talent and enhance the performance of both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s national teams.<\/p>\n

Bitok hailed the addition of retired setter Janet Wanja to the coaching team, saying her international experience will go a long way in assisting the upcoming players.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am among those who recommended her to be put on board. She has brought her good experience having participated in many international competitions. She happens to have the skills as a setter and I am sure this will inspire those serving in the same department,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, national men\u2019s team coach Gideon Tarus said he will include diaspora-based players for the Challenger Cup.<\/p>\n

He is looking forward to qualifying for the African Games after dominating Zone 5, which also has the likes of Egypt and Rwanda.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe morale in the team is high and I expect my players to do well. They must push themselves beyond the limit and punch above their weight. Truth be told, there is a lot of improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n

They do not see Egypt as a superior competitor and are, therefore, ready to battle them to the wire.<\/p>\n

KVF president Charles Nyaberi said they have a packed programme starting with the Africa Games qualifiers, East African Community Games in Kigali and FIVB Empowerment Programme before heading to Finland for pre-Olympic Games training.<\/p>\n

Regarding changes in the technical team, Nyaberi highlighted the dynamic nature of sports and emphasised the federation\u2019s policy of transitioning former players into coaching, refereeing and administrative roles.<\/p>\n
