Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has cautioned elected leaders against speculating about ODM party leader Raila Odinga\u2019s bid for the AU Commission chairmanship.<\/p>\n

Wandayi said those creating unnecessary commotion about Raila\u2019s candidature for the AU top job are unaware of the intricacies of the process.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Saturday during the inauguration of a dual science laboratory at Tingare Secondary School, Wandayi said the process involves complex and sensitive diplomatic engagements.<\/p>\n

He expressed regret that many politicians discussing Raila\u2019s bid want to undermine his chances.<\/p>\n

Wandayi said only the candidate himself and the 54 African heads of State who will be voting in the polls scheduled for 2025 are permitted to discuss Raila’s bid.<\/p>\n

He said anyone else offering unsolicited opinions and advice on Raila\u2019s bid is merely causing unnecessary complications.<\/p>\n

The Minority leader urged leaders to remain calm and allow the process to unfold, expressing confidence in Raila\u2019s abilities to secure the position.<\/p>\n

He advised leaders wishing to exercise their freedom of speech at funerals and political rallies to focus on developmental issues rather than Raila\u2019s AU Commission bid.<\/p>\n

He warned that statements that could potentially jeopardise Raila\u2019s bid for the AU Commission chairmanship will not be tolerated at any public gathering.<\/p>\n

As per the AU Commission rules, a candidate must be nominated by a member state, implying that President Ruto\u2019s administration will be leading Raila’s nomination.<\/p>\n

However, it remains unclear whether or not Raila will withdraw from local politics if he becomes the next AU Commission chair.<\/p>\n

The position requires neutrality on issues related to development, conflicts and politics across all African countries.<\/p>\n

While addressing residents of Gem in Siaya on Friday, Raila affirmed that he would still be available whenever needed in Kenya’s political scene.<\/p>\n

He said that Addis Ababa, the AU headquarters, is only two hours away from Kisumu, which will enable him to provide political advice whenever called upon by Kenyans.<\/p>\n

If elected as the AU Commission chair, Raila will play a crucial role in major international events both in Africa and on the global scene.<\/p>\n

According to the AU elections procedure, the Assembly elects the chairperson and deputy chairperson, while the Executive Council elects the commissioners, who are then appointed by the Assembly.<\/p>\n

The terms for Commission members are four years, renewable.<\/p>\n
