Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Sixteen suspects are in police custody following a massive crackdown that saw detectives recover dozens of suspected stolen phones, laptops and tablets in various parts of Nairobi.<\/p>\n

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin said the region-wide operation conducted on March 4, 2024, targeted suspicious phone repair stalls.<\/p>\n

He said the swoop that followed a surge in the theft of electronic gadgets netted over 182 mobile phones, a laptop, an iPad and two heating machines in the Ruai and Kamulu areas.<\/p>\n

He said five suspects found with the suspected stolen items were arrested.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Kamukunji, detectives confiscated 19 suspected stolen mobile phones before proceeding to Cianda Market where 10 more phones were found,\u201d Amin said in a statement Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

Three suspects were arrested at the two spots, he added.<\/p>\n

The crackdown netted several other suspects in Lang\u2019ata including two who were in possession of 34 suspected stolen phones.<\/p>\n

Two other suspects who were found with eight suspected stolen laptops were also arrested in the same area<\/p>\n

\u201cFour other suspects were arrested in Kasarani’s Githurai 44 area in a similar operation,\u201d Amin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DCI Nairobi Region Coordinator has warned phone thieves posing as phone dealers and phone repairers that detectives are hot of their trail,\u201d a statement from the DCI read in part.<\/p>\n

\u201cEqually, cautioning legit vendors to be careful while handling second-hand electronics as they may put them in serious problems with the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the DCI boss revealed that five other suspected robbers who waylaid a resident of the Matopeni area of Mukuru kwa Njenga – Reli section have since been arrested and arraigned.<\/p>\n

He said they had robbed the victim of a jacket and mobile phone worth Sh20k.<\/p>\n

They were arrested by Embakasi police, he said.<\/p>\n

Amin said the suspects were ambushed minutes after the robbery. The jacket they had stolen was recovered.<\/p>\n

The crackdown on suspicious phone repair stalls comes amid another sustained operation targeting a car theft syndicate that has been stealing vehicles from parking lots in residential areas.<\/p>\n

The crackdown led to the arrest of at least 12 suspects across the country and the recovery of over 10 vehicles.<\/p>\n

Six of the suspects were arrested in Nakuru, one in Eldoret and five in Makongeni, Thika.<\/p>\n
