Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Martin Kimani has said that it has been a privilege serving the country.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Sunday, as his tenure comes to an end, Kimani said that he is grateful to President William Ruto for allowing him to serve the nation.<\/p>\n

He added that it was also an opportunity for him to champion the Head of state’s bold agenda on the global stage.<\/p>\n

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve Kenya as its Permanent Representative to the UN in New York,” Kimani said on X.<\/p>\n

“I am enormously grateful to His Excellency William Ruto for honoring me with the opportunity to advance his bold and consequential leadership on the global stage.”<\/p>\n

His exit follows President William Ruto’s nomination of former Turkana County Assembly Speaker Erastus Lokaale to serve in the role.<\/p>\n

Until the changes, Kimani has since December 2020 been Kenya’s permanent representative to the United Nations.<\/p>\n

He was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n

Kimani has previously served as the Director of the National Counter Terrorism Centre and as a Special Envoy for Countering Violent Extremism in Kenya.<\/p>\n

He also had prior engagements with the UN, serving at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).<\/p>\n

Kimani is remembered for the speech he made at the UN Security Council on February 22, 2022, where he compared the boundaries of Europe and Africa and criticized Russia for recognizing separatist-held regions of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

This earned him the attention of local and international media.<\/p>\n

In the changes announced on Friday last week, Ruto made 43 other nominations and appointments to various diplomatic missions across the world.<\/p>\n
