Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has assured residents of Nairobi’s Kiambiu neighbourhood that the informal settlement is not under any threat.<\/p>\n

In a statement on X, Yusuf said dismissed as false information that has been circulating regarding the demolish of the informal settlement in Eastleigh South.<\/p>\n

“Last night, alongside Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and local MCA Nicholas Okwacho, we dispelled these rumours. We assured the residents that Kiambiu is here to stay,” he said.<\/p>\n

The legislator added that Kiambiu, which is estimated to house 50,000 people, is secure.<\/p>\n

The legislator said that in 2023, together with the Nairobi Governor, they raised the issue of Kiambiu with President William Ruto.<\/p>\n

“At that time, Kiambiu was considered an extension of the Eastleigh Airforce Base, with its ownership claimed by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF),” he said.<\/p>\n

According to the lawmaker, the President acted swiftly and directed the KDF to relinquish ownership of the expansive settlement.<\/p>\n

He said the KDF transferred the 74 acres on which Kiambiu sits to the central government.<\/p>\n

“We are grateful to the President for his decision to normalise the status of Kiambiu and protect the residents of the area,” he said.<\/p>\n

The legislator added that the authorities have since surveyed the Kiambiu land.<\/p>\n

Once the survey plan is completed, he added, they will be able to implement proper infrastructure such as roads, housing, schools and medical facilities for Kiambiu.<\/p>\n

He said that after that, the real development of the neighbourhood will then commence in earnest.<\/p>\n
