Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Taxi hailing firm Bolt has partnered with Kenya Red Cross to support flood victims through a new ride category on its app.<\/p>\n

Dubbed ‘Flood Assist’, five per cent of its revenue will go towards supporting victims of the recent floods countrywide.<\/p>\n

Bolt issued an initial contribution of Sh5 million, with a goal of raising Sh10 million in total.<\/p>\n

Bolt Kenya country manager Linda Ndungu said the initiative speaks to some of their obligations as a mobility company that rooted in the communities it serves.<\/p>\n

“We believe it’s our duty to support those in need during challenging times. By unveiling the ‘Flood Assist’ category, we aim to inspire and encourage Kenyans to join us in supporting flood relief efforts,” Ndungu said.<\/p>\n

“This initiative allows us to use our platform to make a meaningful impact and provide much-needed assistance to those affected by the floods.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his part, Kenya Red Cross secretary general Ahmed Idris, said the collaboration is crucial in amplifying efforts to reach more people and deliver the necessary aid to communities affected by the floods.<\/p>\n

“With Bolt’s partnership and their initial contribution, we can provide critical support such as food, shelter and medical assistance to those who need it most. It is through the involvement of partners like Bolt that we can significantly improve the lives of those affected by this disaster,” Idris said.<\/p>\n

Official data shows the death toll of the floods has risen to at least 228, while 72 people are currently reported missing and 164 have been wounded.<\/p>\n

Generally, more than 223,000 people have been affected by the floods, as authorities continue to enforce the evacuation order that was issued in early May.<\/p>\n

In Nairobi county alone, 163,210 residents have been evacuated from riparian areas as the government arranges alternative accommodation.<\/p>\n

Bolt’s partnership with the Kenya Red Cross hence seeks to ensure the funds raised are used to provide relief food, relocation support and reconstruction of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in the affected areas.<\/p>\n
