{"id":12377,"date":"2020-08-06T18:03:49","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T18:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=12377"},"modified":"2020-08-06T18:03:49","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T18:03:49","slug":"separate-politics-from-revenue-sharing-governor-tells-senators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/policy\/separate-politics-from-revenue-sharing-governor-tells-senators","title":{"rendered":"Separate politics from revenue sharing, Governor tells senators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Author:\u00a0Kennedy Gachuhi\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has faulted the Senate for failing to pass the third-generation county revenue sharing formula.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released yesterday, Mr Kinyanjui accused senators of fighting devolution by starving counties of cash.\u00a0\u201cAdjournment of the debate on the formula is a clear manifestation of the many intrigues that have dogged the process,\u201d said Kinyanjui.\u00a0\u201cIt is time the Senate rises to its solemn responsibility of being the defender for devolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate on Tuesday for a record seventh time, failed to reach consensus on the revenue sharing proposal among the 47 counties and ended up adjourning debate. Kinyanjui, who is for the \u2018one man one vote one shilling\u2019 proposal urged senators to put politics aside and give a way forward on the release of the much-awaited funds<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey should correct past mistakes with courage and realise that beyond the numbers, are people and lives that will be fundamentally affected by the decision they make. There is a need to distinguish the formula making process from short-term political posturing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The governor said addressing the inequalities in the revenue sharing platform was long overdue stressing that the first and second generation formulas have greatly disadvantaged counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn bursaries for instance, some counties have to spread their meagre allocations so thin that the highest get Sh5,000.
