{"id":12507,"date":"2020-08-08T18:19:17","date_gmt":"2020-08-08T18:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=12507"},"modified":"2020-08-08T18:19:17","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T18:19:17","slug":"pauline-njoroge-tourism-board-job-revoked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/community\/pauline-njoroge-tourism-board-job-revoked","title":{"rendered":"Pauline Njoroge Tourism board job revoked"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>Author: Jael Mboga\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has revoked the appointment of Pauline Njoroge as a member of the Board of Tourism Regulatory Authority.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Njoroge&#8217;s posting was revoked after Kenyans on social media brought to the fore her previous post (<strong>pictured above<\/strong>) on the Nairobi National Park.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In her post, Njoroge said the only selling point for the park was that it was the only national park in a capital city in the world.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She was responding to calls to reroute the Standard Gauge Railway to save the park, which according to her was a lost cause as the park is &#8220;economically redundant&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cancelling the appointment, CS Balala said at the time, the ministry was unaware of Njoroge&#8217;s stand on the value of the park.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Speaking on the sidelines of the official launch of domestic tourism campaign at the Masai Mara, Balala said the appointment painted the ministry in bad light.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He thanked the public for bringing to his attention Njoroge&#8217;s remarks.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Balala said Njoroge&#8217;s statements were rather unfortunate since the park is not only a national heritage, but one identified the world over.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;&#8230;because of that statement, I have already started the process of revoking&#8230;,&#8221; the agitated CS says.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"ad-article-page-desktop my-2\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1498022554617-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2016, the\u00a0National Environment Tribunal\u00a0stopped construction of a section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) that was to pass through the park.\u00a0Phase 2A of the SGR project, Nairobi-Naivasha section, was to be constructed through the Nairobi National Park.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The orders were issued after activist Okiyah Omtatah and Kenya Coalition for Wildlife Conservation successfully filled an application against National Environmental Management Authority (Nema), Kenya Wildlife Service, China Road and Bridge Corporation, Kenya Railways Corporation, the Attorney General and the ministries of Environment and Transport.<\/div>\n<div>\nIn a letter dated September 19 that year, the tribunal chairman JK Awuor stopped the planned construction on grounds that Nema had failed to conduct a feasibility study for the project, which is to be undertaken by China Roads and Bridge Corporation company.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Take notice that the National Environment Tribunal has received an appeal from Okiyah Omtatah and Kenya Coalition for Wildlife Conservation and Management against Nema&#8217;s failure to stop the project, which is currently underway without the benefit of Environmental Impact Assessment licence as mandated and required by law,&#8221; said Awuor in the letter.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Omtatah argued\u00a0that without an assessment there is no room to explore an alternative route.\u00a0Njoroge&#8217;s statement, appointment and revocation comes at a time when the tourism industry is grappling with the effects of the pandemic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>CS Balala and other government officials have called on Kenyans to be at the forefront in keeping local tourism alive as international tourists are kept away by the pandemic.\u00a0Kenyan tourism sector has\u00a0lost about Sh80 billion since the breakout of Covid-19 in December last year.<\/div>\n<div>\n\u201cWe lost 50 per cent of our revenue of Sh160 billion with the second half of the year being as good as zero,\u201d Balala said in June at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The CS also projected that for the first half of the current financial year, Kenya will get just 30 per cent of expected revenue.
