{"id":12632,"date":"2020-08-11T18:06:18","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T18:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=12632"},"modified":"2020-08-11T18:06:18","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T18:06:18","slug":"munya-tipped-to-be-mt-kenyas-kingpin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/policy\/munya-tipped-to-be-mt-kenyas-kingpin","title":{"rendered":"Munya tipped to be Mt Kenya\u2019s kingpin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Outspoken Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya (<strong>pictured<\/strong>) is being touted as the next Mt Kenya kingpin to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Munya, who has never shied away from defending President Kenyatta\u2019s legacy agenda and speaking his mind, joined the latter\u2019s administration after he lost to incumbent Meru Governor Kiriatu Murungi in the 2017 gubernatorial polls.<\/p>\n<p>The africa-press has established that at a function at Munya\u2019s home, Jubilee Party vice chairperson David Murathe reportedly let the cat out of the bag, saying Munya was best placed to be the region\u2019s kingpin.<\/p>\n<p>A source who was in attendance told\u00a0The Standard\u00a0Murathe said they will install Munya as a kingpin of the region, citing his consistency in supporting Uhuru\u2019s government.\u00a0\u201cMunya is now ready to be installed as the Mt Kenya kingpin,\u201d said the source in reference to Murathe\u2019s remarks at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Munya is still the party leader of retired President Mwai Kibaki\u2019s Party of National Unity (PNU), which he declined to dissolve alongside 13 others that wound up to form Jubilee Party in the run-up to the 2017 General Election.\u00a0ODM leader Raila Odinga was also at Munya\u2019s home on Saturday during the initiation ceremony of the CS\u2019s first son Karauni Munya.<\/p>\n<p>Raila also weighed in on the fate of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), whose report release and implementation has been hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.\u00a0\u00a0Early last month, a meeting hosted by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi at a Nairobi hotel, dubbed a \u201cpolitical lunch\u201d, brought together leaders from the region as jostling for the kingpin\u2019s post hots up.<\/p>\n<p>Munya, National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya, former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth, governors Murungi (Meru), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru), Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka-Nithi) and Kirinyaga Senator Charles Kibiru attended last month\u2019s meeting.\u00a0The meeting was reported by insiders as one of the many lined up to lay the ground for the region\u2019s political road map.<\/p>\n<p>Also present at Munya\u2019s home on Saturday were National Treasury CS Ukur Yatani, Kiambu Governor James Nyoro, Senate Minority leader James Orengo, Kisii Senator Okongo Omogeni, Alego\/Usonga MP Samuel Atandi and Laikipia County MP Catherine Waruguru.<\/p>\n<p>Raila also talked about the setback to the BBI process, which was suspended, occasioning the halting of reggae.\u00a0He joked how the BBI push was abruptly halted because of Covid-19, but assured those in attendance that the referendum push was on course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHii shetani ya corona ikaingia na tukasimamisha reggae. Reggae has gone for half time. The players are resting and getting advice from the coaches before going back to the pitch (ground),\u201d Raila said, in reference to the hyped BBI report yet to be released by the steering committee chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji.<\/p>\n<p>When contacted, Munya said the event was public and he had invited friends, including his Cabinet colleagues and others.\u00a0\u201cI invited my friends to the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>This was a public event done in broad daylight. Not everyone could come because of the Covid-19 Ministry of Health protocols and we had to observe social distancing. Politicians were in attendance,\u201d Munya told\u00a0The Standard.\u00a0\u201cWhere politicians are they speak politics. You can\u2019t control it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The meeting between the politicians was seen as well-choreographed to send a message. Munya is seen as the main point man for Uhuru in Meru region and is widely accepted on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of those currently in the political field have baggage and are difficult to work with. Munya is emerging as a sober politician who can perform well,\u201d said an official aware of the plans.<\/p>\n<p>Among the political issues discussed in the ceremony were the revenue sharing formula and the BBI.\u00a0Officials present said Raila discussed the issues freely and asked those present to be free to discuss the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot forget that at the end of the day, we are serving people.
