Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo on Monday, November 4, launched the Chiefs\u2019 Climate Action Day aimed at pushing the government\u2019s climate action agenda at the Ondiri Wetlands, Kikuyu Constituency.<\/p>\n

In a statement after the launch, PS Omollo highlighted the crucial role that the administration officers play in advancing the climate action agenda and urged them to utilise the day to mobilise tree-planting exercises of up to 250 trees in their localities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe National Government Administration Officers play a crucial role in advancing climate action agenda by implementing and coordinating various initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability,\u201d Omollo stated.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs\u2019 Climate Action Day, which will be held every first Friday of the month, will have chiefs all across the country lead in coordinating the public and relevant stakeholders in tree planting initiatives across their various locations.<\/p>\n

The chiefs will also be expected to raise awareness about the urgent need to address climate change and its impact on the planet at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

They are expected to oversee the planting of at least 250 trees in each of their locations during the exercise expected to take place monthly.<\/p>\n

This initiative adds to a series of exercises being put in place by the government to achieve the 15 billion tree target by 2032.<\/p>\n

Reaching the target will help the country reduce greenhouse emissions, stop and reverse deforestation, and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes.<\/p>\n

This is expected to be achieved through the African Landscape Restoration Initiative which was launched on December 22, 2022.<\/p>\n

With the gazettement of October 10 as Mazingira Day, also aimed at pushing the climate action agenda, the government continues to pull all the stops to ensure this goal is met.<\/p>\n

This ambitious plan has also garnered President William Ruto a lot of praise even from other global leaders including the King Charles III of England who commended him during his trip to Kenya in 2023.<\/p>\n

“Having been planting trees for most of my life, I thought I was doing rather well, but your ambition for planting 15 billion trees makes me admire your efforts,” he added.<\/p>\n
