{"id":13127,"date":"2020-08-20T19:06:06","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T19:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=13127"},"modified":"2020-08-20T19:06:06","modified_gmt":"2020-08-20T19:06:06","slug":"governor-waiguru-blames-graft-probe-raid-on-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/community\/governor-waiguru-blames-graft-probe-raid-on-politics","title":{"rendered":"Governor Waiguru blames graft probe raid on politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Author:\u00a0Hillary Orinde<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru <strong>(pictured<\/strong>) has termed raids at her homes and office a &#8220;charade&#8221; that is aimed at influencing the 2022 succession politics.<\/p>\n<p>The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on\u00a0Thursday descended on her homes\u00a0in Kagio villlage, Kirinyaga county and Kitisuru, Nairobi in an ongoing probe into claims of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The dawn raid extended to Waiguru\u2019s office\u00a0at the county headquarters in Kutus where EACC officers\u00a0ransacked it in search of crucial accounts documents.<\/p>\n<p>Waiguru and other county officials are accused of\u00a0irregularly receiving travel allowances\u00a0to the tune of approximately Sh23 million.\u00a0&#8220;EACC is in the process of establishing whether the trips were actually undertaken and whether the documents supporting disbursements of Sh23 million to county officials were genuine,&#8221; EACC boss Twalib Mbarak said in a statement shortly after the raids.<\/p>\n<p>The governor has, however, protested the amount saying that she was &#8220;surprised&#8221; by the claims and that &#8220;the inescapable conclusion is that this is not about investigating travel imprests but a wider scheme to shape the 2022 succession politics of Mt Kenya.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wonder where they got this new figure from considering in the impeachment allegations and even their own interrogation of the same the amount was of Sh10m. Why do they see the need to shore up numbers?<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; she posed in a strongly-worded statement sent to newsrooms.\u00a0She was making reference to the July impeachment motion that accused her of among other things, inflating travel imprests. The Senate\u00a0cleared her of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-group readmore my-3\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Waiguru claimed the raids\u00a0were\u00a0a decoy to detract from critical allegations against people on various multi-million corruption allegations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is intended to detract people who have recently been asking legitimate questions about how massive public monies have been spent,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope that in the next few days we shall see EACC officers having the same energy to find out about the billions that are alleged to have been lost in various scandals as they have in the case of my travel imprests&#8221;\u00a0She added that the documents the anti-graft officers were looking for were basic and did not require raids at her homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The multi-person search, complete with police toting machine guns elicited only one document from my official residence and from my house in Nairobi &#8211; my cheque book,&#8221; she said, adding that she would have availed it at EACC\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p>Waiguru added that she had given EACC and the Senate\u00a0all the documents to show her travel and refunds to the county for instances where she did not travel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Surely, you did not need a battery of machine gun carrying policemen, raiding my home in darkness to get my cheque book!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been here before. I have been used as a decoy before. The plot failed then and it will fail now.
