Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The UN secretary-general on Tuesday deplored that the \u201cSecurity Council is outdated and frequently paralysed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in Portugal\u2019s Cascais, Antonio Guterres called on the international community to \u201ckeep working to strengthen global governance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Security Council is outdated and frequently paralysed. Meanwhile the International Financial Architecture does not reflect today\u2019s economy and has become inadequate and unfair,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need for \u201cupdating and reforming international cooperation to make it more networked, fair and inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres also called for peace \u201cabove all\u201d in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see cynical strategies to sow divisions and widen fault lines in societies,\u201d the secretary-general said, and denounced growing \u201cxenophobia, racism and intolerance, — with social media being exploited as a powerful weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeace in Ukraine,\u201d he said, emphasizing the need for a \u201cjust peace in line with the UN Charter, international law and General Assembly resolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeace in Gaza,\u201d Guterres added, and called for \u201can immediate cease-fire,\u201d an effective delivery of humanitarian aid, \u201cand the beginning of an irreversible process towards a two-State solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The secretary-general also called for peace, a cease-fire, and the \u201cfull implementation\u201d of the Security Council resolutions in Lebanon, and urged all parties in Sudan to \u201csilence their guns\u201d and start working for \u201csustainable peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
