{"id":13401,"date":"2020-08-26T19:44:04","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T19:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=13401"},"modified":"2020-08-26T19:44:04","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T19:44:04","slug":"bill-gives-counties-more-say-in-investment-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/all-news\/bill-gives-counties-more-say-in-investment-agenda","title":{"rendered":"Bill gives counties more say in investment agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Author:\u00a0Macharia Kamau\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> The Senate is seeking to give counties more say in running the country\u2019s investment agenda.<\/p>\n<p>This is through a Bill that amends the Investment Promotion Act which was tabled at the Senate in July.\u00a0The proposed law gives the Council of Governors (CoG) two seats in the board of the Kenya Investment Authority, the State agency charged with promoting and facilitating investments in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Investment Promotion (Amendment) Bill, 2020 also gives four seats to the CoG in the Investment Promotion Council, an advisory body that guides the government on growing investments.\u00a0To create space for the county representatives at the council, the number of private sector members is reduced from 12 to eight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Bill seeks to amend the Investment Promotion Act to ensure the participation of county governments in the promotion of trade in the country,\u201d reads a review of the Bill by the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bill seeks to also include the participation of county governments in the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies by the Kenya Investment Authority to attract investors, both foreign and local in the counties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Bill seeks to streamline the management of the authority by outlining the specific qualifications for appointment of board members and their tenure of office.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-group readmore my-3\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The proposed amendment also creates County Investment Units which shall be manned by county executive committee (CEC) members in charge of trade.\u00a0The units, which will have a complete team of officials to oversee the day to day running, will scout for investment opportunities and market them as well as hold investors\u2019 hands when they set up operations in their counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach CEC Member shall by notice in the county gazette designate a unit within the county to be responsible for matters relating to investment promotion,\u201d reads the amendment.\u00a0The respective county public service board will assign staff necessary for efficient discharge of the functions of the units under the Act.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author:\u00a0Macharia Kamau\u00a0 AfricaPress-Kenya: The Senate is seeking to give counties more say in running the country\u2019s investment agenda.
