But going by the overwhelming endorsement it received in the 2010 referendum, it seems Wanjiku didn\u2019t mind adding the extra plates on her table.<\/p>\n<p>For years, she had served 222 MPs \u2013\u00a0 elected and nominated\u00a0\u2013 without complaining one bit. She bought into the lie by crafters of the document that it was the best thing to happen after independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us create 416 of our kind \u2013 greedy to the core and never satisfied with their pay. They will be puppets of the Executive,\u201d the writers of the document perhaps declared of the MPs before making a move for Wanjiku\u2019s ignorance.\u00a0They told her that the countless positions they had created were necessary as they only wished to ensure she was sufficiently represented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more, the merrier,\u201d they said. Wanjiku bought it, along with the lie that Parliament would be bolder as a watchdog.\u00a0And on the anniversary, she probably cursed her choices\u00a0 now that she is ten years wiser.\u00a0But the MPs were dancing to the tune of her grief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anniversary party<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a top-secret meeting, a few miles off no-man\u2019s-land, some MPs threw anniversary party for the document that cemented their stature as puppets.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-group readmore my-3\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So secret was the party was that it never that the media had no idea about it. And if it weren\u2019t for a leaked phone-call recording between two waheshimiwas, no one would have known of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Mhesh. We will throw a party to celebrate Katiba\u2019s birthday tomorrow. Are you in?\u201d the first voice is heard saying.\u00a0\u201cHey. I\u2019m in for any party. But who is that? And isn\u2019t he too young to be a\u00a0Mhesh? Or is he one of your sons?\u00a0Wait, it can\u2019t be what I\u2019m thinking,\u201d a second voice responds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh god\u2026\u201d the first person groans.\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t tell me you\u2019re planning to make us spend public funds on your son\u2019s birthday party. Smart, I admit. And I know we can pull it off. But don\u2019t you think it\u2019s a bit reckless?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could anyone be this dumb?\u201d the first person thinks to himself before responding. \u201cKatiba isn\u2019t a person.\u00a0It\u2019s Kiswahili for \u2018Constitution\u2019. And tomorrow marks 10 years since it was passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstitution?\u201d\u00a0\u201cYes. That one. What is it?\u201d the second person, obviously sounding distressed, poses.\u00a0\u201cA constitution is a set of laws that govern a country. The same laws we make back in\u00a0Bunge.<\/p>\n<p>Or rather, the same laws the Executive force down our throats,\u201d the first voice offers.\u00a0\u201cWait, just wait. We make laws and this is the first time you\u2019re telling me about it. When did we start making them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince we assumed office in 2017. Let me explain&#8230; every time you have chanted \u2018aye\u2019, you have made a law.\u201d\u00a0\u201cAnd what happens when I say \u2018nay\u2019?\u201d the second voice is heard asking, before the person on the other end hangs up, having had enough of his colleague\u2019s ignorance.
