Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>President William Ruto was on Thursday afternoon forced to halt his address momentarily after Members of Parliament broke into chants.<\/p>\n

The President was in the middle of giving his State of the Nation address as required constitutionally.<\/p>\n

As he laid out his report and plans for the country, a section of legislators started chanting “Fire! Fire! Fire!” slogans.<\/p>\n

During his address, the President insisted that Kenya has made \u201ccommendable progress\u201d over the past three years but is still performing \u201cbelow its true weight,\u201d urging the country to abandon what he called a culture of \u201csmall thinking and ordinary expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruto said he was shifting from \u201ca vision to sell\u201d to \u201ca story to tell,\u201d reflecting on Kenya\u2019s 62-year journey of \u201cstruggles, hardships, triumphs and milestones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI reflected deeply on the long road we have travelled as a nation,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom this reflection came one truth: we have made commendable progress, but Kenya is still below its true weight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president called for a new national mindset anchored on ambition and courage, saying it was time to push beyond mediocrity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must cast off the prevailing mindset of being content with the average,\u201d he told lawmakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must step beyond the comfort of the familiar and the ordinary, and reach\u2014with courage, clarity and conviction\u2014for nothing less than excellence and greatness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruto acknowledged the turbulence of the past three years, marked by political disagreements, compromises, and what he described as \u201cstorms that none of us invited.\u201d He said, despite the difficulties, the country had laid the foundations for economic recovery.<\/p>\n

The president said his administration had taken \u201cbold and sometimes difficult decisions,\u201d including ending what he called wasteful subsidies and tightening revenue collection.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe acted,\u201d he said. \u201cWe limited wasteful subsidies, strengthened revenue collection, and placed our economy on the path to recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruto noted that inflation had \u201csteadily declined to 4.2 per cent,\u201d which he described as evidence that \u201cthe tough choices are working.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruto, who arrived at Parliament shortly after 2pm accompanied by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, was received by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri.<\/p>\n
