\nAfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Security agencies in Kajiado County say the region is slowly turning into a poachers’ haven and have consequently heightened surveillance.<\/p>\n

The county is home to at least three national parks and several private\u00a0wildlife sanctuaries.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, a number of suspected poachers have been arrested in the county while transporting elephant trophies and other products worth millions of shillings.<\/p>\n

In the same region,\u00a0poachers\u00a0are said to have been capturing snakes, skinning and selling them to unsuspecting consumers as fish fillets.<\/p>\n

According to the Kajiado criminal investigations chief Isaac Meme, there is a multi-million shilling elephant trophies racket involving senior government officers.<\/p>\n

Meme said detectives are hunting two civil servants said to be masterminds of the racket.<\/p>\n

Key suspects<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cA multi-agency team has been deployed to unmask the civil servants suspected to be working in the shadows of their bosses,” said Meme.<\/p>\n

He said the suspects have been exporting the finished products to China and other foreign countries.<\/p>\n

In the last two months, more than 15 suspects have been arrested and arraigned in a Kajiado court with the offense of handling elephant trophies<\/p>\n

Kenya Wildlife Service\u00a0director in charge of Kajiado County Limuarte Leng\u2019uro said\u00a0the arrest\u00a0indicates the presence of a thriving black market involving\u00a0elephant trophies\u00a0and wildlife meat in Kajiado.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is evident that trade in wildlife trophies is rampant in this region. It\u2019s unfortunate the intricate\u00a0web of poachers\u00a0is run by civil servants,\u201d said Mr Leng\u2019uro.<\/p>\n

“The multi-agency team is moving very well with investigations. Our DCI counterparts are leading us and we are very sure that very soon we shall unmask the masterminds of this racket,” said Leng\u2019uro.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
