Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has distanced himself from claims that he mishandled funds meant to pay Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) election agents during the 2022 General Election.<\/p>\n

Sifuna instead shifted the blame to individuals close to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Saturday, Junet was responding to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who had challenged him to explain why party agents were allegedly absent from polling stations and unpaid during the election.<\/p>\n

Junet claimed the failure was the result of decisions taken by individuals close to the former president, not party officials tasked with campaign coordination.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe answer is simple, clear and verifiable: Former President Uhuru Kenyatta released the funds meant for election agents to his blood brother, Muhoho Kenyatta,\u201d Junet claimed.<\/p>\n

Junet alleged that Muhoho then appointed another man, identified as Patrick Mburu to oversee the recruitment and payment of agents.<\/p>\n

Junet alleged that Mburu presented himself as an information technology expert capable of detecting and preventing manipulation of results by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).<\/p>\n

\u201cMburu presented himself as an IT expert, claiming he had the capacity to detect and prevent any manipulation of results by the IEBC,\u201d Junet claimed, adding that Mburu remains an aide of the former president.<\/p>\n

To underscore Mburu\u2019s continued proximity to Uhuru Kenyatta, Junet cited a recent trip abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust this past weekend, Mburu travelled to Nigeria in the company of Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo Musyoka\u2014clear evidence that he is not a peripheral figure in these matters,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n

Junet further claimed that the management of the agents\u2019 funds was conducted from a highly restricted office in Nairobi\u2019s Westlands area, which he said was inaccessible to most party officials, including ODM\u2019s presidential candidate Raila Odinga.<\/p>\n

\u201cAround the time, Muhoho Kenyatta operated from an office in Westlands that was so restricted that even Raila Odinga, the party\u2019s presidential candidate, could not access it freely,\u201d Junet alleged.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is from this office\u2014out of bounds for nearly all of us\u2014that they claimed to handle the agents’ payments and other logistics.<\/p>\n

\u201d He claimed those involved failed to recruit or deploy agents for Odinga across key regions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact is, once they took charge, they never procured any agents for Raila Odinga, not in Mt Kenya and not in Luo Nyanza,\u201d Junet claimed.<\/p>\n

Rejecting any suggestion that he had betrayed the party leader, Junet cited his continued trust within ODM.<\/p>\n

\u201cRaila Odinga would have had no reason whatsoever to appoint me\u2014Junet Mohammed\u2014as the Leader of Minority in the National Assembly if I had truly betrayed him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Junet called on those involved to publicly address the allegations.<\/p>\n

\u201cKenyans deserve the truth about the handling of agents\u2019 money; who controlled it, who mishandled it, and then decide who cost us the election,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
