{"id":15681,"date":"2020-10-09T19:47:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T19:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=15681"},"modified":"2020-10-09T19:47:55","modified_gmt":"2020-10-09T19:47:55","slug":"kra-to-serve-taxpayers-on-mobile-phones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/economy\/kra-to-serve-taxpayers-on-mobile-phones","title":{"rendered":"KRA to serve taxpayers on mobile phones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has brought essential services to tax payers\u2019 mobile phones in a bid to spur compliance.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0KRA\u00a0M-Service App is expected to boost the\u00a0taxman\u2019s revenue collection efforts by simplifying access to services such as PIN registration and verification, filing of returns and payment of tax.<\/p>\n<p>The application was commissioned on Monday during the launch of this year\u2019s national Taxpayers Month held every early October to celebrate\u00a0highly compliant Kenyans.<\/p>\n<p>Themed \u201cEnhancing tax administration for economic sustainability\u201d, the fete also marked the 25th anniversary since\u00a0KRA\u00a0came into existence.<\/p>\n<p>This as records show improved tax mobilisation efforts where during the 2019\/2020 financial year, the taxman managed to raise up to Sh1.607 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Also planned to go online is the controversial legal-backed e-commerce tax also known as known as\u00a0Digital Service Tax (DST).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDST is intended to address the change in business models and expand the tax base and becomes effective from 1st January 2021 following its introduction through the Finance Act, 2020,\u201d said\u00a0KRA\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The tax, according to the law, is payable on income derived from or accrued in Kenya from service offered through a digital market place.<\/p>\n<p>The law spells out that DST is payable at 1.5 per cent of the gross transaction value and is due at the time of transfer of\u00a0payment for the goods or service to the provider.<\/p>\n<p>KRA\u00a0Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Tax Advisory Caxton Masudi said by making the tax payment process more convenient, the new approach is expected to widen taxpayer reach and increase revenue collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe application will enable taxpayers to access\u00a0KRA\u00a0services\u00a0on the go, subsequently enhancing compliance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that over 100,000 Kenyans have so far downloaded the App available on Google Play Store, adding that\u00a0KRA\u00a0is working with developers to make the app accessible on Apple Store by December this year.<\/p>\n<p>Further, to enhance the user experience,\u00a0KRA\u00a0said it will progressively introduce new functionalities to the application\u2019s English and Swahili versions including\u00a0USDD communication with the\u00a0Domestic Taxes Department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will also be integrated with the Integrated Customs Management System (iCMS).
