Get ready. We shall be answering your questions, but we must continue working so when we come back asking for your votes, we shall tell them that when we say \u2018tuko kadi,\u2019 we mean \u2018kadi\u2019 for development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President William Ruto also joined the trend, affirming that he is preparing for 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase has rapidly evolved into a cultural and political expression, particularly among Gen Z voters, who are increasingly shaping public discourse.<\/p>\n<p>What started as street slang has now become a symbol of political awareness and civic participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNiko Kadi\u201d \u2014 sometimes \u201cTuko Kadi\u201d \u2014 is pure Sheng, the Swahili-English street talk that has long dominated Kenyan urban culture.<\/p>\n<p>Loosely translated, it means \u201cI have the card\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m registered to vote\u201d (short for Niko na kadi ya kura). When someone drops it, they\u2019re flexing: \u201cI\u2019m ready. I\u2019ve done my part for the 2027 elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it didn\u2019t start as a political slogan. The phrase comes from the classic Kenyan card game kadi, think Mau-Mau or estate poker nights. Come 2026, they flipped the script: instead of just criticising, they would register to vote and participate actively in shaping the leadership of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>I hope we\u2019re not just making noise online without being registered voters,&#8221; one TikTok user warned.<\/p>\n<p>Another added, &#8220;There will be no change in our leadership if we don\u2019t register and actually vote. Change happens at the ballot. We might complain online about how things are run, but if we don\u2019t cast our votes, nothing will change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The message came at the perfect time, just as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) resumed voter registration. Slowly, it caught on, transforming from a cautionary reminder into a full-blown trend.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase &#8216;tuko kadi&#8217; has evolved from street slang to a political rallying cry among Kenya&#8217;s youth, particularly Gen Z voters.
