AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Deputy President William Ruto\u2019s allies have dismissed any attempts to reunite their boss with President Uhuru Kenyatta, even as their rivals dismissed talks of a truce as \u2018pure imagination\u2019.<\/p>\n

Instead, they want his status as a functional deputy president who chairs Cabinet sub-committees, among other roles, to be fully reinstated before he can commit to a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

After The Standard reported yesterday that two religious leaders were leading the drive to reunite the once \u2018dynamic duo\u2019, leaders convened at the DP\u2019s Karen residence and resolved to rebuff current and future reconciliation attempts until certain conditions are met.<\/p>\n

Those at the meeting included senators Kithure Kindiki (Tharaka\/Nithi) and Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo-Marakwet), MPs Alice Wahome, Rigathi Gachagua and Kimani Ichung\u2019wah.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really do not see anything meaningful that will come out of it. We have lost our jobs, we have been taken to court, we have been sacrificed and in all these, the law was circumvented,\u201d one of the attendees told The Standard.<\/p>\n

Mr Murkomen said they wanted the President to have the basic courtesy, adding that it was not too much to ask. He added that they were not asking the President to support Ruto, but to be a leader and lead the country in good faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cForget the truce. What we are asking for is simple: respect the DP and his office. Let him restore Ruto\u2019s duties and ask the juniors to behave with decorum. That is what we are requesting. A political handshake is not our priority now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Soldier on<\/p>\n

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro said they were not interested in a truce because it would not add value to their team. \u201cWhy now? We will soldier on as it is. They know their strategies are not working.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei said the horse had bolted. \u201cWe are not interested in political truce.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reconciliation talks were also repudiated by leaders in President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga\u2019s camps, with Jubilee vice chair David Murathe saying they were a figment of Tangatanga\u2019s imagination.<\/p>\n

\u201cKindly disregard their propaganda. The President is busy serving the nation and those claiming that there is a planned truce are talking to themselves,\u201d said Mr Murathe.<\/p>\n

Nominated MP Maina Kamanda said that while there was no problem in talking, no one on their side could trust Ruto as long as he harboured ambitions of becoming the country\u2019s fifth president.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ruto group is trying to use the truce talks to slow down our support for Raila. We are telling them that we cannot be distracted. With the way Ruto is disrespecting the President, who wants to associate with him?\u201d said Mr Kamanda.<\/p>\n

Fellow MPs John Mbadi (Suba South), Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), Joshua Kutuny (Cherangany), Lilian Gogo (Rangwe), Ben Momanyi (Borabu) and Ayub Savula (Lugari) also weighed in on the matter.<\/p>\n

Mr Mbadi said any conversation would have to be brutally honest. \u201cThere is no two ways about it. The person leading the reconciliation talks should either tell Uhuru to abandon his peace and unity agenda of the country and help Ruto\u2019s selfish 2022 presidential campaign or tell Ruto to stop early campaigns and help in service delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ODM party chairman said Uhuru\u2019s handshake with Raila was aimed at uniting the country and any attempts to scuttle the peace were selfish pursuits.<\/p>\n

Mr Kaluma said it is Ruto that sought peace and reconciliation, and not the other way round. \u201cHow do you reconcile a person with his boss? Ruto should get it out of his mind that he is some co-president. He is not. As the deputy president, he should and must respect the President.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Kaluma, ODM\u2019s political strategy was not dependent on Ruto\u2019s relationship with Uhuru.<\/p>\n

Mr Kutuny denied knowledge of any truce process but admitted that the animosity between the two was real.<\/p>\n

Mr Momanyi said any truce between the two leaders would not affect the political strategies already in place, but warned the DP to respect his boss.<\/p>\n

Ms Gogo waded into the matter, saying any discussions that fostered peace would be welcome. \u201cRaila stands for peace, stability and unity. Raila has given his whole life for better governance of our democracy, and this includes peaceful coexistence among all Kenyans. Politics and political strategy cannot be pegged on a non-peaceful Kenya. Peace is paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Savula said the DP did not respect institutions of power, adding that church leaders should tell him to stop early campaigns if their interventions are to bear fruit. \u201cThe issues of the two are irreconcilable. The DP is struggling to inherit the office whose occupant is still in office.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also emerged that some of Ruto\u2019s allies feared that committing to truce talks would put them at a disadvantage because they would be negotiating from a point of weakness.<\/p>\n

The Standard also established that they had rejected one of the mediators, a Cabinet secretary from the Rift Valley, for allegedly condoning the whittling away of Ruto\u2019s powers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
