The report highlights that Kenya ranks 38th in Sub-Saharan Africa for waste generation and management, with projections indicating significant increases in waste generation due to population growth. The country is working towards improving its waste management system,,

Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya is trailling its East African peers of Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania on solid waste management, according to a World Bank report.

This, as the global lender projects much of the growth in global waste generation over the coming decades will be in Sub-Saharan Africa, with an increase from approximately 230 million tonnes to over half a billion tonnes by 2050.

This increase will largely be driven by a rise in population as the per capita rate increase in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, currently standing at 26 per cent.

The report dubbed “What a Waste 3.0”, global snapshot of solid waste management toward circularity until 2050, notes that municipal solid waste generation in Sub-Saharan African countries is on the rise.

Kenya is ranked 38 in solid waste generation and management in sub-Saharan Africa. Tanzania is ranked sixth with Uganda coming in ninth.

Of the 231 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per year generated in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, 160 million tonnes were uncollected, 54 million tonnes taken to dumpsites and the remaining 17 million tonnes either taken to controlled landfills or recycling.

Dandora remains the biggest sump site in Kenya and one of the largest in Africa.

Food waste tops the composition of municipal solid waste in Sub-Saharan Africa (44.2%) followed paper and cardboard (11.9%) and plastic (9.6%).

Waste generation and projections by country or economy shows that Kenya generates approximately 3.6 million tonnes of waste per year with an estimated population of 53.7 million people.

This is expected to go up to 5.2 million tonnes by the year 2030, with the populations expected to have hit 62.5 million people by then.

By the year 2050, Kenya will be generating at least 10.7 million tonnes of waste, according to the World Bank.

“In low-income countries, uncollected waste is often managed independently by households and may be openly dumped, burned or less commonly, composted,” notes Ming Zhang, World Bank Group director, global department for urban, subnational finance, tourism and disaster management.

“Solid waste is one of the most visible by-products of human prosperity—and one of the most underestimated threats to our shared future.”

The report indicates that municipal collection rates vary between regions, with South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa having the lowest collection rates of all the regions.

All other regions have collection rates close to 80 percent or higher.

“Improvement of waste collection services is a critical step toward reduction of pollution,” says Zhang.

Nearly 29 per cent of all plastic waste, or 93 million tonnes, is mismanaged. Of this, 13 per cent is poorly managed in uncontrolled facilities such as dumpsites, and 16 per cent remains uncollected.

Middle-income countries are the leading source of unmanaged plastic waste, generating 87 per cent of the global total.

Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific produce the largest quantities of unmanaged plastic waste at 15 million tonnes, 14 million tonnes, and 12 million tonnes, respectively.

According to Eorld Bank, waste generation follows rates of urbanization, economic development and population growth.

As nations and cities grow more populated and affluent, products and services are more accessible to residents and nations have more opportunities to engage in global trade and exchange.

This corresponds with increased amounts of waste that must be managed through treatment and disposal, World Bank says.

Kenya is actively transforming its waste management system from a linear “dump-and-burn” approach to a circular economy model, driven by the Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022.

This comprehensive shift mandates waste segregation at the source, emphasizes Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and aims to turn waste into resources like fuel, fertilizer and building materials, according to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Sustainable Waste Management Act (2022) establishes the Waste Management Council, mandates EPR, and requires the closure of illegal landfills across all 47 counties.

Producers are now legally required to bear responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products, encouraging reduction and recycling.

The law requires, and enforcement is beginning, the separation of waste into organic and non-organic components at the source.

According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), many counties still lack proper infrastructure, with a significant amount of waste in cities like Nairobi remaining uncollected.

The new policies aim to better integrate waste pickers, who play a vital role in recycling but often work without regulation.

While policies exist, enforcing the law against illegal dumping and ensuring compliance with segregation remains a challenge, UNEP notes.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government is also investing in e-waste management and promoting “wastepreneurship” to create jobs while managing waste.

The issue of solid waste management in Kenya has become increasingly pressing as urbanization and population growth continue to rise. The Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022 aims to transform waste management practices by promoting a circular economy, emphasizing waste segregation, and establishing producer responsibility. Despite these efforts, challenges remain in infrastructure and enforcement, particularly in urban areas like Nairobi, where much waste remains uncollected.

Historically, Kenya’s waste management has relied heavily on informal practices, with many households managing waste independently. The World Bank’s report underscores the urgent need for improved waste collection,

Find more news and analyses on Kenya on the Africa Press website

What You Need to Know According to a World Bank report, Kenya is falling behind its East African Community (EAC) counterparts in solid waste management.
