The East African Business Council (EABC) reports that Kenya’s service sector now contributes 70% to the country’s GDP. This growth is driven by travel services, which account for 40-50% of exports, followed by transport and ICT services. A recent workshop aimed to enhance the export readiness of over 30 Kenyan firms, focusing on bridging policy and business practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>The service sector is now contributing up to 70 per cent of Kenya\u2019s Gross Domestic Product, the East African Business Council (EABC) has revealed.<\/p>\n

EABC executive director, Ahmed Farah, said this when over 30 Kenyan firms were trained on service export planning in Nairobi in collaboration with the East African Community (EAC).<\/p>\n

The remarks of EABC executive director, Ahmed Farah, highlighted that services are the fastest-growing sector, contributing approximately 55\u201370 of Kenya\u2019s GDP in recent years.<\/p>\n

According to him, travel services dominate exports at about 40\u201350 per cent, followed by transport services at 25\u201330 per cent.<\/p>\n

The ICT and digital services contribute around 10\u201311 per cent, while financial services and other business and professional services each account for an estimated 5\u201310 per cent.<\/p>\n

Adrian Njau, EABC Trade & Policy Advisor, delivered the remarks.<\/p>\n

Vital Habinshuti, representing the EAC Secretariat, said that the workshop comes at a critical time when services trade is increasingly driving growth, innovation, and job creation across the region.<\/p>\n

He emphasized the importance of strengthening private sector capacity to take advantage of opportunities under regional and continental frameworks such as the EAC Common Market Protocol and the AfCFTA.<\/p>\n

He explained that while progress has been made in liberalising services, the full benefits would only be realised through an informed and empowered private sector, capable of navigating market access requirements and regulatory environments.<\/p>\n

The training focused on bridging the gap between policy frameworks and business practice by equipping participants with practical skills in export readiness, market entry strategies, and regulatory compliance.<\/p>\n

Participants explored approaches such as establishing commercial presence, forming strategic partnerships, and bidding for regional opportunities.<\/p>\n

Overall, the workshop strengthened awareness, enhanced export readiness, and fostered regional networks among service providers, with strong participation from SMEs, including women- and youth-led enterprises.<\/p>\n

It also highlighted persistent challenges such as regulatory barriers and limited market intelligence, reinforcing the need for continued capacity building.<\/p>\n

Kenya’s economy has seen a significant shift towards the service sector over the past few decades, reflecting global trends where services increasingly dominate economic output. The EABC’s findings underscore the importance of this sector in driving economic growth and job creation, particularly in a region where traditional industries are evolving. As the service sector expands, it faces challenges such as regulatory barriers and the need for improved market intelligence, necessitating ongoing support and capacity building for businesses.<\/p>\n
