The project aims to restore the railway&#8217;s role in regional trade, with a budget of Sh5.5 billion. It is expected to enhance connectivity between Kenya and Tanzania, creating economic opportunities and improving transportation for goods and people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>President William Ruto has launched the reconstruction of the Voi\u2013Mwatate\u2013Taveta railway line, which had remained inactive for nearly two decades after the collapse of freight and passenger services along the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>The railway, once a key transport link between Kenya and northern Tanzania, had fallen into disuse following a steady decline in operations. The revival project now seeks to restore its role in regional trade and connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>President Ruto announced that the government will spend Sh5.5 billion on the rehabilitation of the Metre Gauge Railway line. A dry port will also be constructed in Voi town as part of the broader infrastructure plan.<\/p>\n<p>He said the renewed line is expected to reconnect the historic Mombasa\u2013Voi\u2013Taveta\u2013Moshi\u2013Arusha\u2013Singida\u2013Bujumbura trade route.<\/p>\n<p>The restored corridor is projected to shorten the distance between Mombasa and Bujumbura by 358 kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>The President said the project will position Voi as a strategic logistics hub linking the Port of Mombasa with the Taveta\u2013Holili One-Stop Border Post on the Kenya\u2013Tanzania border.<\/p>\n<p>He added that it will improve the movement of goods and people across the three countries.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the railway will also open up economic opportunities in the region, including the exploitation of Taita-Taveta\u2019s mining potential and improved export and import of agricultural produce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will create more job opportunities for young people in Taita-Taveta County and beyond, boosting trade and spurring growth of the local economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Ruto spoke in Voi during a development tour of Taita-Taveta County, accompanied by Governor Andrew Mwadime, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Woman Representative Haika Mzighi, Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government remains committed to transforming Taita-Taveta County to ensure it is not left behind in national development efforts.<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, the President inspected the ongoing construction of the 55-kilometre Mto Mwagodi\u2013Dawida\u2013Mbale\u2013Wundanyi\u2013Bura Junction road in Mwatate Constituency.<\/p>\n<p>About 10 kilometres of the road have already been completed, with the project expected to be finished early next year.<\/p>\n<p>He also reviewed progress on the Illasit\u2013Rombo\u2013Njukini\u2013Taveta road, which connects Kajiado and Taita-Taveta counties. Out of the 60-kilometre stretch, 20 kilometres have been completed.<\/p>\n<p>Other projects highlighted include the ongoing construction of the Cess\u2013Lake Jipe road, the advertised Maungu\u2013Kasigau road, and funding secured for the 18-kilometre Voi\u2013Sagalla road.<\/p>\n<p>The President also launched the construction of the Sh950 million Voi Stadium, a 10,000-capacity facility, alongside a Sh300 million modern market in Voi town. The market will include cold storage and other facilities aimed at reducing post-harvest losses.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government is focused on delivering projects it committed to under its manifesto, adding that it is moving away from what he termed a history of unfulfilled political promises.<\/p>\n<p>He told residents that the administration is now focused on the implementation and delivery of development projects across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to assure you that I will deliver on the assignment you gave me. When the time comes, you will examine me, and I am confident I will pass with an A+,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The President also warned against divisive politics, saying such approaches undermine national unity and democratic progress.<\/p>\n<p>He said opposition leaders had resorted to \u201cname-calling, hate and theatrics,\u201d and argued that they had not presented a clear alternative development agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam Ruto is not on the agenda. It is a person&#8217;s name,\u201d he told opposition leaders.<\/p>\n<p>He added that his administration would respond to criticism through the delivery of development projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey criticise me with words; I will answer them with action,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to national unity under the Broad-Based Government arrangement. He said the approach was designed to reduce division, tribalism and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were on different political sides, but because of our desire to unite Kenyans, we created the Broad-Based Government that seeks to eradicate hate, division, tribalism and discrimination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also urged supporters of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to participate in grassroots elections scheduled for April 23, 2026, saying the process was key to strengthening local leadership structures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want every village to be linked to the National Government through grassroots leaders because our agenda is bottom up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Mwadime praised the government\u2019s development record in the county, urging residents to reject divisive politics and support ongoing projects.<\/p>\n<p>He said the administration had initiated a significant number of projects within a short period and expressed confidence in the county\u2019s transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Sports CS Salim Mvurya said the government\u2019s development focus had benefited the coastal region, noting what he described as a strong implementation record.<\/p>\n<p>Woman Representative Haika Mzighi also said the government had delivered beyond expectations in infrastructure, markets, housing and sports facilities in the county.<\/p>\n<p>The visit concluded with renewed commitments from leaders to support ongoing projects aimed at improving transport, trade and economic growth in Taita-Taveta County.<\/p>\n<p>The Voi\u2013Mwatate\u2013Taveta railway line was once a vital transport corridor linking Kenya with northern Tanzania.
