Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>Services at Kenyatta National Hospital were on Monday paralysed after nurses downed their tools, citing delayed deductions, pension concerns and heavy workload.<\/p>\n

Patients were left stranded across several departments as the industrial action took effect, with the nurses\u2019 leadership saying the move followed unresolved welfare issues.<\/p>\n

A representative speaking on behalf of the nurses said frustrations have been building over time, particularly around salary-related deductions and working conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a medical cover, but when a nurse is sick and goes to seek medical check-up, medicine is missing or we are given basic drugs. We end up paying cash,\u201d the representative said.<\/p>\n

The nurses also raised concerns over non-remittance of statutory and third-party deductions, saying the delays have affected their financial stability.<\/p>\n

According to the representative, some workers have faced challenges with loan repayments and other deductions, which they said are not being remitted in time.<\/p>\n

The union further cited staff shortages, noting that the current workforce is stretched beyond capacity. \u201cWe have been overwhelmed by work. The workload is too much compared to our numbers.<\/p>\n

Currently we are about 2,300 yet we are supposed to be around 2,800,\u201d the representative said. The situation has been compounded by frequent strikes in other hospitals in neighbouring counties, which they say pushes more patients to KNH.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany hospitals in Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado and Kiambu go on strike, leaving us to handle all patients. This affects the quality of care,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nurses also pointed to congestion at the facility, saying some patients seek treatment for minor illnesses that could be handled at lower-level health centres.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt times, cases like simple fever come here, leaving those with serious illnesses waiting for long,\u201d the representative said.<\/p>\n

The strike comes a day after KNH management sought to address the concerns, stating that salaries had been paid up to March 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cStaff salaries have been processed and paid up to March 2026. The settlement of statutory and third-party deductions is undertaken through structured remittance arrangements linked to institutional cash-flow cycles,\u201d the hospital said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Management attributed delays in remittances to broader national healthcare financing systems, noting that reimbursement frameworks influence payment timelines. \u201cConsequently, the timing of remittance processing is influenced by the broader national healthcare financing and reimbursement cycle,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The hospital said it is engaging government institutions and stakeholders to streamline the processes and resolve the issues.<\/p>\n

KNH also maintained that discussions are ongoing with unions to address concerns, including pension contributions and transition of staff to permanent and pensionable terms.<\/p>\n

Despite the assurances, nurses insisted that the issues remain unresolved, warning that services will continue to be disrupted until concrete action is taken.<\/p>\n

The standoff has raised concerns over access to specialised care, given KNH\u2019s role as the country\u2019s largest referral facility, with both sides now under pressure to find a resolution through dialogue.<\/p>\n
