Heifer International Kenya has initiated the Transforming Yield through Feed and Fodder Access in Dairy (TYFFAD) project to address feed shortages affecting dairy farmers. The four-year program aims to support over 50,000 smallholder farmers by improving feed storage, access to quality inputs, and market connections, ultimately enhancing dairy productivity and farmer incomes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>For many dairy farmers, the big challenge is not a lack of feed, but poor storage which limits milk production and farmers\u2019 earnings.<\/p>\n

Waweru Nyangi, a farmer from Rongai in Nakuru county says when the rains come, grass grows fast and fodder is plenty. But a few months later, the same farm struggles to feed livestock.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are forced to sell hay immediately after harvest because we don\u2019t have proper storage. Then during the dry season, we buy the same feed at double or even triple the price,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we can store feed properly and access markets at the right time, dairy farming will be more profitable. Right now, we lose too much when we should be gaining.\u201d<\/p>\n

To address this, Heifer International Kenya has launched a new initiative aimed at solving these problems. This is through the Transforming Yield through Feed and Fodder Access in Dairy (TYFFAD) project. The four-year programme is expected to reach more than 50,000 smallholder farmers in the country.<\/p>\n

Experts point to feed and fodder shortages as the biggest bottleneck to high milk production for dairy farmers.<\/p>\n

According to the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), average milk production stands at about 7.5 litres per cow per day. This is far below the potential of improved dairy breeds, which can produce more than 20 litres daily under optimal conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cFeed is the single most critical factor limiting dairy productivity in Kenya,\u201d said Midina Yattani, who spoke on behalf of the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of milk is produced by smallholder farmers operating at low levels of productivity,\u201d she said. \u201cThe root cause is the lack of adequate and quality feed. Addressing this gap is essential to improving farmer incomes, strengthening resilience and unlocking the full potential of the dairy sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yattani pointed out the ongoing government efforts to strengthen the sector, including the establishment of a multi-stakeholder platform for feed coordination, development of the Livestock Bill, and investments in research through the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (Kalro) to improve access to quality, climate-resilient fodder varieties.<\/p>\n

\u201cAcross dairy-producing regions, farmers are producing fodder, but gaps in storage, access and market coordination continue to limit its value. During the rainy season, surplus production often forces farmers to sell immediately at low prices because of limited storage capacity. In the dry season, feed becomes scarce and expensive, creating a cycle that affects productivity and incomes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

According to industry estimates, a bale of hay can cost as little as Sh100\u2013150 during the rainy season, but rise to between Sh300 and Sh500 during dry periods, this places a heavy burden on farmers and reducing profitability.<\/p>\n

The TYFFAD project seeks to change this cycle by improving how feed systems function\u2014from production and storage to market access. It will support farmers to adopt better preservation methods, access quality inputs such as improved seeds and connect to more stable markets.<\/p>\n

Wairimu Munyinyi-Wahome country director, Heifer International Kenya said issue goes beyond production.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor many farmers, the challenge is not effort, it is access\u2014to quality feed, reliable systems and functioning markets,\u201d she said. \u201cFodder is abundant during the rainy season but not well conserved and then becomes scarce when demand is highest.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the project will also introduce practical solutions such as mechanisation services, digital advisory tools and financing options tailored to smallholder farmers.<\/p>\n

Wairimu said partnerships with research institutions like the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Kalro are expected to enhance access to climate-resilient fodder varieties.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment efforts are also underway to support the sector, including the development of the Livestock Bill and the establishment of a national platform to coordinate feed and fodder systems,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The project will be implemented in key dairy-producing counties including Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kiambu and Narok, with a strong focus on women and youth, groups that play a major role in dairy farming but often face barriers in accessing land, credit and markets.<\/p>\n

Dairy farming is a crucial sector in Kenya’s agriculture, providing livelihoods for many smallholder farmers. However, challenges such as inadequate feed storage and access to quality fodder have historically limited productivity. The average milk production per cow remains significantly below potential, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to enhance the dairy sector’s efficiency and profitability. Recent government initiatives and partnerships with organizations like Heifer International aim to address these issues and support farmers in overcoming barriers to success.<\/p>\n
