Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>Former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has officially assumed office as Kenya\u2019s National Security Advisor, taking over from outgoing advisor Monica Juma in a handover ceremony held on Tuesday, April 14, at the University of Nairobi.<\/p>\n

Boinnet, who previously served as Deputy National Security Advisor after his appointment by President William Ruto in 2023, officially stepped into the top security advisory role following Juma\u2019s transition to a new assignment at the United Nations.<\/p>\n

In a message shared by European Union Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger, the handover was described as a moment reflecting Kenya\u2019s growing engagement in global governance.<\/p>\n

\u201cKenyan National Security Adviser Ambassador Monica Juma hands over the baton of her office to Joseph Boinnet this morning at the University of Nairobi. Ambassador Juma shared her insights on multilateralism and Kenya\u2019s role in shaping a new global rules-based order,\u201d Geiger stated.<\/p>\n

Boinnet now takes over the role as not only the national security advisor to the national security council but also as an advisor to President Ruto on matters of security.<\/p>\n

Monica Juma has now left the position as she takes up her new roles as the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as well as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).<\/p>\n

\u201cUnited Nations Secretary-General Anto\u0301nio Guterres announced today the appointment of Monica Kathina Juma of Kenya as Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as well as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV),\u201d the UN said in a statement on March 7.<\/p>\n

Before his appointment in the security council in 2023, Boinnet tried politics in the 2022 general elections, showing interest in the Elgeyo Marakwet gubernatorial seat before being floored in the UDA party nominations.<\/p>\n

At the end of his tenure as IG in 2019, former president Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him as a chief administrative secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Tourism.<\/p>\n

Under his new role, Boinnet will advise the President on national security policies, integrating domestic, foreign, and military strategies, and overseeing the functioning of security organs.<\/p>\n

The role focuses on advising on threats to sovereignty, conducting annual security reviews, and facilitating the National Security Council’s mandate.<\/p>\n

Article 240 of the Constitution mandates the Council to integrate domestic, foreign, and military policies on national security to enable the national security organs to cooperate effectively and function efficiently.<\/p>\n

Joseph Boinnet’s appointment as National Security Advisor marks a significant shift in Kenya’s security landscape. Previously, he served as the Inspector General of Police and Deputy National Security Advisor, showcasing his extensive experience in law enforcement and security matters. His predecessor, Monica Juma, has transitioned to a prominent role within the United Nations, indicating Kenya’s increasing involvement in global security governance and multilateralism. Boinnet’s new responsibilities will include advising on national security policies and integrating various security strategies to address both domestic and international threats.<\/p>\n
