The Transport Sector Forum warns of mass action if their demands are not met, highlighting the severe impact of fuel costs on the transport industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya. <\/strong> <\/span>Kenyan transport groups have issued a set of demands to the government to mitigate the effects of fuel prices, which rose to new highs in the latest review<\/p>\n<p>Among their demands is a call for the government to cap diesel prices at Ksh140 and petrol at Ksh150 per litre,with the stakeholders warning of mass action if their proposals are not considered.<\/p>\n<p>The Transport Sector Forum, led by the Motorist Association of Kenya (MAK), issued the ultimatum on Monday, April 20, following an emergency meeting in Nairobi that brought together transporters, matatu owners, truck operators, boda boda riders, and cargo haulers under a unanimous agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Besides price caps, the group wants the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) to be made the sole handler of all Government-to-Government fuel deals, arguing that the current system fuels artificial shortages and opens the door to exploitation by unscrupulous middlemen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe propose that the National Oil Corporation of Kenya be designated as the primary source for Government-to-Government (G-to-G) fuel deals,\u201d a joint statement read.<\/p>\n<p>They added, \u201cThis measure is crucial to cushion members from artificial shortages, combat fuel adulteration, and eliminate other forms of exploitation prevalent in the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the group wants fuel subsidies reinstated immediately, with the government tapping into reserved funds to absorb market shocks and cushion operators from sudden, steep price hikes that have repeatedly blindsided the sector in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, monthly price reviews under the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) are also a striking demand on the demand list the group wants the system scrapped and replaced with the older Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) model, which used a reliable scientific formula rather than the process they now describe as politically influenced.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, they called on stakeholders to be included in the price-setting process, as was the practice during the ERC era, to ensure transparency and fairness.<\/p>\n<p>They cite that this is because rising fuel costs have affected the entire transport sector, with the price of tyres, lubricants, and spare parts having climbed sharply alongside pump prices, squeezing operators from multiple directions and eating directly into margins that were already thin before the crisis deepened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current volatile fuel pricing regime has inflicted immense losses across the transport sector, particularly impacting players who rely on early quotations for their services,\u201d stressed the group.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the group wants a minimum of three months&#8217; warning before any future fuel price increase takes effect, saying surprise hikes make it impossible for businesses to plan ahead or price their services fairly and sustainably.<\/p>\n<p>The forum has formally requested an urgent meeting with the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum,Opiyo Wandayi, to present their grievances directly, with all major transport bodies aligned behind the push for an immediate and concrete government response.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Kenya has faced fluctuating fuel prices that have significantly impacted the transport sector. The government&#8217;s previous fuel subsidy programs aimed to stabilize prices but were discontinued, leading to increased costs for transport operators. The current economic climate, marked by rising global oil prices, has exacerbated the situation, prompting calls for renewed government intervention to protect the sector and consumers alike.
