This situation has reportedly led to hundreds of local residents developing cancer and the deaths of thousands of livestock.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed by hundreds of local residents, accuses BP of dumping toxic materials that have contaminated groundwater in the villages of Karghi and Kalacha in Marsabit County, northern Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Although BP did not conduct oil exploration between 1984 and 1990, which is alleged to have left hazardous waste still affecting the area today, it acquired the American oil company Amoco in 1998, which carried out those operations.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs&#8217; attorney officially submitted the case documents to the British company through the Foreign Office after BP previously objected to the case on procedural grounds.<\/p>\n<p>The petition states: &#8220;Marsabit County has witnessed an increase in cancer rates over the past three decades, alongside ongoing livestock deaths and disease exposure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Kelvin Kobai told a local source that BP is being sued because, through its acquisition of Amoco, it &#8220;inherited both assets and liabilities.&#8221; He added: &#8220;British Petroleum is being sued for the historical activities of Amoco.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kobai explained that court documents reviewed by a local source indicate that around 200 petitioners have died, most of whom suffered from various types of cancer, and that family members are currently representing them in the case. He described what happened as &#8220;ecological genocide,&#8221; warning that the number of affected individuals may be larger and still rising.<\/p>\n<p>Asunta Galgitele, the lead petitioner, stated that she cared for several relatives who later died from cancer, noting that the cause was due to the contamination of the wells from which they drew water.
