The National Police Service has made immediate changes to President William Ruto’s security details moments after his security was breached while at an event in Ganze, Kilifi County.<\/p>\n
In the changes made by Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service on Sunday evening, Noah Kirwa Maiyo, who has been the commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU), was relieved of his duties of commanding Ruto’s security and was moved to the Kenya Police Headquarters at Vigilance House in Nairobi.<\/p>\n
Mayo’s position as PEU Commandant was then taken over by William Sawe, who, until his appointment, was the commanding officer of the Recce sub-unit, effective immediately.<\/p>\n
“The Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service has made the following changes in the Kenya Police Service,” read part of the letter announcing the changes.<\/p>\n
This means that Sawe will now be tasked with ensuring the head of state’s security is not threatened or felt to be threatened in any way.<\/p>\n
Kirwa has been serving as the presidential security chief for years now, before being redeployed to new roles under the vigilance department after repeated breaches in the president’s security.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Juda Matthews Gwiyo, who has been serving as the Deputy Commandant of PEU, was directed to proceed on leave ahead of his retirement.<\/p>\n
George Kirera, who was serving as the staffing officer at PEU, was then appointed as the new Deputy Commanding Officer of Ruto’s security detail.<\/p>\n
The changes also extended to the Recce squad, where Josephat Sirma was named the Commanding Officer of the Recce sub-unit, taking over from Sawe, who had been appointed PEU Commandant.<\/p>\n
The changes followed the order by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who ordered immediate changes in Ruto’s security team after a man attacked him at the presidential dias when he was speaking at an event in Ganze, Kilifi county.<\/p>\n
“I have ordered immediate changes to the security detail responsible for the President\u2019s protection in order to strengthen protocols and seal any existing vulnerabilities,” Kanja said in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The man managed to reach the head of state moments before his security team could reach Ruto, in what was a brief security-threatening situation.<\/p>\n
However, this is not the first time Ruto’s security has been breached. In recent months, reaching the head of state has proven to be easier than usual, raising questions about the swiftness of his security detail.<\/p>\n
On February 12, Ruto’s security also came under threat after a young man accessed a podium where the president was speaking, but his security team sprang into action, tackling the man before reaching the most protected man in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
