Fourth President Uhuru Kenyatta has hit back at President William Ruto and some leaders within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), accusing them of promoting divisive, ethnic-based politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n
Uhuru spoke during a Jubilee Party delegates’ meeting in Kiambu on Monday, May 25, where he went on a passionate rant against UDA allies, calling out some leaders over remarks made in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
Without mentioning names, the retired former Head of State expressed disappointment in some leaders, as he subtly slammed Ruto for allegedly turning a blind eye to some remarks made by UDA allies during a recent engagement in Mombasa last week.<\/p>\n
“Nobody is supposed to threaten a certain community because we are all Kenyans, and God knows why we are together in this country. You should not divide us,” Uhuru stated.<\/p>\n
The former President warned that ethnic politics threatens national cohesion, accusing current leaders of lacking accountability when addressing the public.<\/p>\n
“We have started seeing others spreading divisive ethnic politics. They don’t have shame while saying these things. They are making the remarks in front of leaders of our country, and nobody tries to stop them,” he added, pointing an accusing finger to Ruto for failing to caution Omar after his remarks.<\/p>\n
Uhuru’s remarks come at a time UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar is facing criticism over his remarks in Mombasa last week during President Ruto’s tour of the coast region.<\/p>\n
Omar is accused of making remarks linked to ethnic politics directed towards the Mount Kenya community, and his sustained attacks on Uhuru Kenyatta, remarks that were widely seen as likely to cause chaos in the country ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n
“It’s not that we lack knowledge. We have been struggling while you oppressed us as we watched. We have no problem with anyone, but you can’t always show us arrogance and pride. We also went to school; we are not stupid or lazy,” Omar stated in part during a rally.<\/p>\n
Uhuru termed the remarks that were recently made as dangerous for the country, warning that the remarks are likely to propagate division that could lead to chaos that Kenya once witnessed in the 2007 post-election violence.<\/p>\n
“As a nation it is good to tell ourselves the truth. This is not the first time we are seeing leaders making divisive remarks that promotes violence and we last saw the same in 2007 that fueled the violence,” he added.<\/p>\n
The former president called on leaders in government to promote peace, calling on political players to sell their agendas to the electorate instead of making remarks that could sink the country into chaos again.<\/p>\n
Uhuru also used the opportunity to explain why he was still involved in active politics despite retirement. He revealed that he intended to exit active politics in good faith, but endless court battles involving the Jubilee Party forced him to remain the party leader.<\/p>\n
“When I left the presidency, I handed over power peacefully and stepped away in good faith. Some people saw it as an opportunity to tarnish our party. They dragged us into unnecessary court battles that should never have happened,” he said.<\/p>\n
Uhuru maintained that his decision to remain in the political scene is to stabilise the party before overseeing a transition within the party.<\/p>\n
“I would have stepped away completely were it not for the court cases initiated by certain individuals. But here we are,” he added.<\/p>\n
